Default The Brits are Coming! UK Indie / Alternative Rock Thread

Over the 2 years I've been a Linker, I've posted lots of the UK's Indie Rock music from my youth (haha!) in the 'What's in My CD Player' thread, basically clogging it up with stuff from the 1980s onwards as it really was the music on which I grew up and which I still love to this day - it's a genre which continues to grow and thrive and I honestly think it makes for bloody good listening.

Tonight, as I was about to post yet more of the same, I thought, "Enough! Let's start a new thread on this" - that way, you guys have the option to avoid like the plague if you so wish - or, maybe join in...For all I know, a lot of you may know some (if not all) of this material already - in which case, come on in and join the party - or perhaps you'd just like to expand your musical horizons! Whatever your decision, I can just happily post away in here to my heart's content, hopefully not annoy too many Linkers in the process and, with a bit of luck, some more British Indie Music fans will eventually show their faces!

I thought I'd start the ball rolling by announcing the arrival of The Vaccines second album, "Come of Age". If it's anything like the first, "Whatever Happened to The Vaccines", it should be AMAZING!

They'll be touring the US as of January, next year (2013) - check out their website for details:

    http://www.thevaccines.co.uk/gb/splash/

Their current single is called, "Teenage Icon" - and here it is!

Can we expand this to include US acts too?

BTW, I'm sure this is now Zachenfoot's favorite thread.

Jake - do you know something? I think I'm going to be really mean and strict and say, "No" to the US stuff, even though loads of it IS fabulous! (That's if the Mods are OK with that?) I hope you don't think I'm being horrible but maybe we could have a thread devoted to the American Indie scene too?

And, yes, Zach's got good taste where his Alternative music is concerned!

ZACH, you bloomin' nuisance! Did you not read the original premise of the thread!? I'm being xenophobic in here, for heaven's sake!

OK, OK - you and Jake win - if you really MUST post your American stuff in here, I shall accommodate it - and, of course, that goes for ALL our International Linker Buddies as I am quite certain there is a flourishing Indie Rock scene outside the confines of Blighty and the US!

Can't have an Indie thread without including these gentlemen with whom the genre is probably most associated, certainly over here in the UK anyway! I remember discovering them at the age of 16 when I went to the infamous Hacienda nightclub in Manchester and danced (tranced) the night away!

Another track I heard for the first time on that same evening was the MARVELLOUS "There She Goes" by Liverpudlians, The La's...Sadly, they only ever produced the one album (which, in my opinion was a work of genius - and probably explains why they were never able to create another). Fortunately however, bassist and backing vocalist, John Power (he of the wild, curly hair) went on to form Cast, another one of my favourite bands. Anyway, because I am VERY kind, here's the US version of "There She Goes" - enjoy; it's ACE!

Flew from the U.S. to Liverpool just to see Cast on the All Change 15th Anniversary tour. Ended up seeing them the next night in Leeds and partying with them after the show. My favorite band by far.

    Thanks for the thread!

You are WELCOME! And thankyou for that cool little anecdote - that is what I call real, true dedication!

I've seen Cast a couple of times in the past. In actual fact, out of all the gigs I've attended in my life thus far, their performance at Hereford Leisure Centre in 1998 (I think?) caused me the worst case of tinnitus I have EVER experienced! My God, those boys were LOUD!

I've not had the privilege of partying with them - but I did bump into John Power in a local pub once. Nice bloke!

Hmm, I think this is a brilliant album. I like the video too.

"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump

"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana

'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

Yes, that IS a good 'un - it's used quite a lot on TV commercials over here.

But, I have to say, BB, you've disappointed me this evening - when I saw your name on here I felt SURE you'd have posted something - ANYTHING - by The Smiths... My female intuition isn't what it used to be, it seems.

So, on your behalf, I shall post a couple of my fav's by them, starting with the AMAZING, "Panic":

to be followed by the equally fab, "How Soon Is Now":

I know I said, "a couple" so do you think it would be seen as over-kill if I also posted, "Girlfriend in a Coma"? Oh, what the hell - it'd be rude not to!
