Default Chickenfoot, Lighten Up (Live Version) Song Premiere

Chickenfoot are getting set to re-release their self-titled 2009 debut album in October, featuring four live bonus tracks. But fans won’t have to wait that long for a taste; you can hear the live version of ‘Lighten Up’ right here, thanks to our exclusive preview.

Former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony got together with guitar hero Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith to form Chickenfoot, whose debut effort went gold, but is not currently available. The group will rectify that with this new double-disc package, which features the entire original album on disc one. A second disc includes a bonus track from previous European editions titled ‘Bitten by the Wolf,’ and live versions of ‘Lighten Up,’ ‘Big Foot,’ ‘Last Temptation’ and ‘Something Going Wrong.’

The song may be titled ‘Lighten Up,’ but the members of Chickenfoot certainly didn’t take that advice themselves for this track, which originally appeared on ‘Chickenfoot III’ and was captured in this live version during last spring’s Different Devil tour. The drums and bass provide a perfect instrumental bed for the heavy guitar riff, topped off by Sammy Hagar’s rough-and-ready vocal and a ridiculous Joe Satriani solo highlighted by lightning-fast passages that alternate with bursts of wah-wah.

The re-issue package is due on Oct. 16 from eOne.

Chickenfoot’s Debut Gets New Legs on Double-Disc Set

    POPMARKET.com - BACKSTAGE

It only saw release a few years back, but hard-rock supergroup Chickenfoot is reissuing their out-of-print debut album with a nice amount of extra tracks.

The incredible pedigree of the band – featuring former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony on vocals and bass, respectively, along with guitarist Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith – earned a heavy amount of media attention upon first release, particularly as Hagar and Anthony’s former bandmates in Van Halen re-recruited David Lee Roth to join them on tour. Don’t expect VH clones on Chickenfoot’s self-titled debut, though. Smith’s kinetic drumming and Satriani’s always-virtuosic six-string licks kept hard rock traditions alive while marking new territory for the quartet.

Amazingly, despite its A-list status (and, for a modern rock album, impressive gold record from the RIAA for over 500,000 copies shipped), the album fell out of print in recent years. To remedy this, the group acquired the masters are partnering with the eOne label (who released the band’s sophomore disc, Chickenfoot III, in 2011) to expand and reissue the disc.

The double-disc set will feature newly-heard live tracks recorded during the group’s Different Devil Tour, in support of Chickenfoot III – all of which seem to be songs from that album – as well as “Bitten by the Wolf,” a studio bonus track on import pressings and digital editions of the original album. (No word as to whether or not the new pressing will retain the neat original cover, printed with heat-sensitive ink.)

I think whoever released it went out of business or discontinued it due to lack of funds required to keep it on the shelves. The same thing happened to Sammy's Ten13 and maybe Not For Sale (not sure about that but he was selling them when I saw him in concert a few years back and the later I heard him talking about how the record company that issued them went under).

As business-savy as Sam is, I'm a bit surprised that he never got into making his own label. That would simplify his life so much. Yeah, there'd be some headaches setting it up, but once it's going he could recoup and distribute his entire catalog. It would also allow him to promote budding artists. I imagine he could easily record and distribute from Cabo or his home studio.

I thought one of his disks was released under Cabo Wabo Music or something like that.

He started the Cabo thing but ultimately, even boutique labels need the majors for distribution.

I would guess he never got bigger into it is because it's a dying business model. The days of an Apple (beatles), Swan Song (Led Zepplin), etc... are long gone, sadly never to return.

Old timers like me miss going to the local record store and thumbing through the bins. I got my VH "Roth jumping splits" poster after begging the local record store manager for several weeks. Having something like that in your room was pretty cool.

It's not a great time to start this kind of business, with record sales diminishing every year.
However I do think there should be some tax incentives to save the CD, as it's an important cultural artform. If you just let the market play out, I don't think a lot of museums would still be around. I think you think about classic, timeless records, they're no less valid of an artform.

Plus, even if he started something now, he wouldn't own the back catalog which is where the money for his stuff would be.

Bigfoot appears to have been recorded from Seattle. Does anyone know if the other tracks are from the same show?

The Lighten Up intro has 45 seconds of crowd noise before the first note. I bought the live stuff individually; I don't like buying the same song twice on iTunes.
