    Default 1983 Brink of Apocalypse

Today i was with a group of business people in my adopted hometown of Dusseldorf, Germany, when a siren went off. It lasted for quite a while and was very loud. I'd heard it before but never taken too much notice. One chap told us all that it was a natural/manmade disaster/ missile warning alarm. Most in the room genuinely didn't realise it's significance or what we should do.

It was just a regular annual test.

So, it got me to thinking about my teens when nuclear war seemed imminent in the world of the early 80's, perhaps even more likely than the cuban missile crisis. I remember watching nuclear attack warnings on television and seeing incredible docu-dramas such as "Threads".(a horrific movie if ever there was one). Then I thought about this (link posted doc) I saw a while ago.

As much as the world is looking dangerous at the moment (coming war with Iran and Israel, India and Pakistan staring each other down, suitcase nukes, bio weapons etc) this great film reminds me of why we were all pretty worried in 1983 and, realised only years later, how extremely close we came to just blowing each other to smithereens.

If you have a little time, this thing is worth a watch.

    Part one linked here....

    Enjoy your evening.

I remember being shown in grade school a chart of how many missiles we had vs. what the Soviets had.

As a child, we studied the following poem in class. Written in 1961 by Peter Porter, I remember that it absolutely terrified me:

    "Your Attention Please"

    Your Attention Please
The Polar DEW has just warned that
    A nuclear rocket strike of
    At least one thousand megatons
Has been launched by the enemy
    Directly at our major cities.
    This announcement will take
Two and a quarter minutes to make,
    You therefore have a further
    Eight and a quarter minutes
    To comply with the shelter
    Requirements published in the Civil
Defence Code - section Atomic Attack.
    A specially shortened Mass
Will be broadcast at the end
    Of this announcement -
    Protestant and Jewish services
    Will begin simultaneously -
    Select your wavelength immediately
    According to instructions
In the Defence Code. Do not
    Take well-loved pets (including birds)
Into your shelter - they will consume
Fresh air. Leave the old and bed-
ridden, you can do nothing for them.
    Remember to press the sealing
    Switch when everyone is in
    The shelter. Set the radiation
Aerial, turn on the geiger barometer.
    Turn off your Television now.
    Turn off your radio immediately
The Services end. At the same time
Secure explosion plugs in the ears
Of each member of your family. Take
Down your plasma flasks. Give your children
The pills marked one and two
In the C.D green container, then put
Them to bed. Do not break
    The inside airlock seals until
    The radiation All Clear shows
(Watch for the cuckoo in your
    perspex panel), or your District
    Touring Doctor rings your bell.
If before this, your air becomes
Exhousted or if any of your family
    In critically injured, administer
    The capsules marked 'Valley Forge'
(Red Pocket in No. 1 Survival Kit)
    For painless death. (Catholics
Will have been instructed by their priests
What to do in this eventuality).
This announcement is ending. Our President
    Has already given orders for
Massive retaliation - it will be
Decisive. Some of us may die.
    Remember, statistically
It is not likely to be you.
All flags are flying fully dressed
On Government buildings - the sun is shining.
Death is the least we have to fear.
We are all in the hands of God,
Whatever happens happens by His Will.
Now go quickly to your shelters.

    Peter Porter

I remember seeing 'Threads' in school. I decided straight away that I would like 'the bomb' to explode directly above my house....That movie was horrific.

Pretty scary stuff, the early 80's. It was literally so likely that WWIII would occur that my family moved from LA to Jacksonville Oregon after my Dad studied carefully about locations where survival chances were best in nuclear winter.... Seriously. Jackson County Oregon gave the best odds because of a myriad of reasons. Jet stream, furthest area away from a direct blast, how the air bubbles around the valley, where the underground well water came from, wildlife, everything. Today, he'd sound like a nut. Back then, he was the smart one. The earthquake/nuclear bomb drills were taken seriously.

Other factors contributed to the move too, like LA/Inglewood totally sucked butt holes. But if you're moving at that time, move smart.

In America, we had THIS to scare the living daylights out of us!

I had nightmares over seeing this and saw it again a few years ago and it took me back to 6th grade. I remember all of the kids talking about it at school the next day. It was an event.

The Day After was on TV over here a while back. Very different to the movie Threads which we had and far less graphic. I remember not being able to watch it all in one sitting when it was shown on TV and then had to watch it at school.
Thats when I decided I don't want to survive a nuclear war, who in their right mind would?

Another film that came out - in 1988 I believe - which tackled the subject of nuclear war was the animated, "When the Wind Blows". It's very different in tenor to "Threads" as it allows for moments of gentle comedy amidst the dark hopelessness of the situation...Terribly moving stuff and well worth a view if you get the chance and don't mind shedding some tears into your bowl of popcorn...

A great movie that conveys the message in a slightly less harrowing manner to Threads..

You're right about that tommy. "The day after" just felt like a disaster movie to me. "threads" fucks you up because it is so undramatic. It is probably the grimmest film I've ever seen. No light at the end of the tunnel is even hinted at, and the scenes set years after the war are even more depressing than the immediate aftermath.

I think the only movie that comes close in this genre is "On the beach". The original version of that from (I think) 1959 is floating around the web somewhere.

I just watched the movie Fail Safe for the first time the other day. For being an old black and white movie, it still holds up well to today. For those not familiar, it's kind of like War Games (or War Games is kind of like Fail Safe ) where there's an accidental order sent out to strike the USSR and then they spend the next hour trying to figure out what to do. The movie never really drags and it handles the tension believably (for the most part). Henry Fonda plays the President, and his phone calls with the Soviet Premier are some of the most tense and believable scenes I have seen from that era.

And that's not even mentioning the ending which will stick with you for a few days.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Talking about close calls and not knowing how close we were to destruction:

During the Clinton/Yeltsin years, there was an incident where a satellite launch (or was it a missle test?) was flagged by the Soviet defenses. The generals pressed Yeltsin to launch a counter-strike on the US thinking it was the first volley. Thankfully, Yeltsin was more level headed and called Clinton first. Obviously we didn't all die that day, but apparently we were that close to ending the world.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.
