So I missed my Pink EBMM....

    So here's a story...

In 2000 I retired my pink EBMM. My wiring got screwy after a show and I figured it was just time. It was my main axe for nearly 9 years, I had beat the fuck out of it. It lived through college, the awful Northridge quake (when my amp FELL on it and chipped the back), a bunch of bands, dumb friends jamming on it, and I just wanted to preserve what was left of it and not bash it up anymore when I discovered the pink ones were rare. So on my wall it went and that was it.

Fast forward 5 years. After buying a brown EBMM on Flea-Bay I decided to fix the wiring on my pink one. So I re-soldered everything and no worky. I was like, "Ah fuck it, who cares, I never play it, I'll just put it back on the wall." So back it went.

Fast forward to yesterday. I looked at the wall, "You know I want to play this thing." It literally has not been played in 12 years. So I take it down, re-solder it. Nothing but awful noise. So I think maybe it's the jack. It's a pain, but I swap it with another guitar and solder. Same thing. Static, awful noise. Maybe it's the pot...ok change that out...spend another 30 minutes soldering that. Plug it in....STATIC! I'm like, "fuck this fucking thing." I am about to just throw it across the room, and I'm like, "Maybe I have the ground backwards on the jack...nah...well what the hell." I rewire it...plug it in...HOLY SHIT that was it. I fucking had the crap wired backwards!!!!!! I could have had this thing playing like 7 years ago...HAHA.

I was so happy that I cleaned off the 12 years of grime that had piled up on it, played it for like 3 hours last night, and it still plays awesome. There is something very different about those early EBMM's I don't know what it is. They just sound awesome, and are so smooth to play. My '95 amber one is nowhere near as good...make no mistake, it's nice...but that old '92 pink one just blows it away. It felt weird to have sound coming out of that thing, it literally has been dead since I was in my 20's. HAHA!!!

Anyway, just thought I'd share for no particular reason.

My EBMM is a 1992 model and im the original owner.
That was my main axe for years, went through 2 or 3 toggle switches, 2 jacks, and 2 tremolo units.

I just set up a friend's '92 blue EBMM EVH. He also retired his, and after spending some time with his guitar I advised him to take it out of retirement. For a 20-year-old guitar it was in phenomenal shape, and there was no reason to let it sit around.

    HA HA HA!

I love those old EBMMs. They're solid. Wish I would have bought one back in the day.

Sounds to me like it's really the pickups that went bad on you...I'll take em off your hands.

    Cool story.

I also had a pink '92 and (according to the store I got it from) it was the very first pink one to be imported into the UK.
I sold it in around '98 for 200 more than I originally paid for it.

Brett I suck at guitar wiring as well. I burned the Baretta I got from you trying to "fix" something. I will gladly pay someone to do that from now on.

HAHA. I can wire them just fine, I just had it backwards on that guitar. Didn't really think about it, have done so many just assumed I had it right. Was very happily surprised when I reversed them.

Haha, ya man -- I think it happens to everybody. The thing that gets me the worst is the fact that Dimarzio and Duncan use different wiring colors/schemes. And then GFS pickups sometimes are identical to Duncans, sometimes they aren't.... not to mention all the other pickups and OEM pickups out there. I'll often use a different brand bridge and neck pickup in the same guitar... for whatever reason that usually works best for me... so I almost always end up wiring at least one of the humbuckers in wrong and have to fix it....

A timely thread. I just got my pink Tribute last week partly to cut down on all the miles I've been putting on my blue EVH, which I got for $1100 around 1998. So I decided to finally take the blue EVH's bridge completely apart and clean it up. The saddle inserts have always been stiff and I always had to use a Swiss Army Knife small blade to wedge them back to let the strings out. It was pretty grimy.

Anyway, she's all back together and set up now and those damn saddle inserts are still stiff and sticky. They don't appear to come out from the saddles, so proper cleaning is next to impossible. So I'm thinking I want to go with a set of Graph Tech String Savers. I'll never ever sell my EVH, so affecting its value isn't a concern. And, of course, I'd keep the original bridge in a safe place. Has anyone replaced the saddles on their EVH? How did that work out?

I've replaced a couple of EVH Saddles due to corrosion/wear. The Graph Tech are a good alternative. I've found that replacing the blocks will help. I use a dental pick to remove the block. Once you get them out you'll have to trial and error the replacement blocks, as they seem to vary, but replacing them helps.

If they're sticky due to sweat/grim, soaking them in naptha and then acetone works to unclog the saddle*.

*Don't drink, smoke, ingest the naptha or acetone. Don't mix them. Use caution when handling any chemical. Use rubber gloves/latex gloves when handling chemicals*

If you're going to replace the saddles, and the guitar is a "in use" guitar, I'd look at the Titanium saddles. They're pricey, but sound good.
