    Default Schools Target Kindergarten Truants

The New Britain Connecticut school district has assigned a retired psychologist and a parks and recreation employee to reduce chronic absenteeism among kindergartners.

The New Britain Herald reports that Joseph Vaverchak, the director of attendance, said it's intended to increase awareness.

About 29 percent of New Britain's kindergarten population is chronically absent, which is defined as missing at least 10 days of school last year.

In addition to meeting with parents, the two staffers will monitor data about students who are missing school and why.

Statistics show that children who are chronically absent from kindergarten fall behind in their school work later on, including the ability to read proficiently in the third grade.

A national study by Johns Hopkins University researchers released in May found absenteeism highest in kindergarten and high school.

And this is in the kids control how?

Sounds like the parents need a good bad upside the head and all will be well

Also, I get the psychologist, but what exactly is the parks and rec employee going to contribute? A horse ride?

I'm gonna guess it's just an office worker that was in parks and rec.

i get the schools being concerned. Not sure you need a shrink to look at this but kids are completely at the mercy of their parent(s) at that age. If you see a kid consistently missing school for no reason, it can be something to be concerned with.

it shouldn't be a story that hits the press but someone in the office should escalate this if they see a pattern established. The shitty kindergarten parent becomes the shitty grade school parent. Better to get on this stuff early. Good parents should never be impacted by this. The more should though is key here.

Oh, I get that but it just shows how these things truly are outlandish. The parents are the issue, not the kids, and until that is resolved, why spend any time / money on it?

You cant fix stupid or lazy. Millions upon millions try every day, yet between this and tagless recess, making teachers learn Spanish as opposed to teaching the kids English, and now Britney Spears on X Factor, we are doomed

of course, this i hope is something aimed right at parents. You hope that you can embarrass the parents into getting their kids to school on time every day.
