Default Vote for Eddie in Guitar World's Greatest Guitarist of All Time Poll

Poll: The Greatest Guitarist of All Time, Round 4 — Eddie Van Halen Vs. Randy Rhoads

Go and show Eddie some love! The poll is current at 54% Eddie / 46% Randy Rhoads, and apparently Eddie and Randy have been the two most voted for guitarists in the poll so far. Let's move him on to the next round!

Another poll. Randy was great no doubt. He gets a lot of the "Jimi esque" voting now. Died at their peak with their best works at the forefront etc etc. What Randy would have or could have done had he lived, is pure guesswork. Based on the criteria of poll, Ed wins hands down. Aside from his own amazing body of work, Ed could play anything Randy played. (at least whatever Randy recorded) I don't see an argument.

I do not agree at all that Ed could play all of Randy's stuff. Their styles really aren't that similar and there is a lot of legato stuff that Ed has rarely derived into at all.

It's funny how the two brackets are organized. On one side you got the blues rock players (plus jazz maestro Les Paul) and the other side is the shredders. Interesting.

Randy and Eddie are two totally different type of players due to their timing. Randy was very regimented and rarely played off the beat like Eddie. Eddie couldn't even think about picking scales like Randy could. Eddie plays in patterns which sometimes go outside the box however if Randy played outside of it, it was for a reason a la his live version of Paranoid.

George Lynch pre Back for the Attack was like a combo of Eddie and Randy with style and technique.

Anyway Randy does get a lot of praise for being dead but unlike some guys, he never reached his potential or blew it on drugs.

I think a bracket-style take on the whole "who's the best guitarist" is a fun way to go. Makes it much more interesting, at least, and forces the voter to realize how difficult it is to compare even two guitarists, let alone a whole pool of them. I think the hardest pairing on there right now is Jimi vs. David Gilmour; how does one even think about those two with the same area of the brain!?

I voted for Ed, because although I think he has a tendency to be a one-trick-pony, he pretty much nails the other three categories hands down. The innovation goes without saying and I personally think his timing/phrasing is second to none. Obviously I wasn't around when Eddie burst on the scene, so I don't know exactly how he impacted the guitar-learning youth of the day, but I've heard enough on the Links and seen enough bands cite him as an influence to be pretty confident that he is the reason a lot of people are playing the guitar today, including myself.

Anyways, it will be cool to see how this progresses.

Edit: as of now, Ed has 67% of the votes
