Default DLR interview with Allan Handelman 1980

First let me apologize for not having the link to the interview but maybe someone else can find it. Handelman is a local talk host (that has had a regional syndicated show) that has interviewed just about everyone over the last 30 years. He seems to be known by many in the industry even though he has been in a small to mid-sized market for most his career.

Anyway, this weekend he replayed one of his early interviews and it was with DLR. I can't find a link to the podcast yet but those that know iheartradio may be able to find it. This is a great interview with a young DLR, recorded in the men's room of the arena in VA.

Also this week, my 2005 revealing conversation with Phyllis Diller who died this week at the age of 95. And, from the archives my very first interview with David Lee Roth back in 1980. It's was Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll. Recorded at the Hampton Coliseum in Virginia during the tour to support their third album, Women And Children First. It was out of control madness that turned out to be a radio classic.

I have a Dave interview by Handelman on his old East Coast Live show, and it's from Halloween.....I think around 82. Maybe 83....I don't remember.

Got it on a cassette somewhere. Need to get it into the computer and uploaded. I do remember Dave has a chick named Tina with him. When he signs off, he tells "all you people out there in Car Land, reach down between your legs and......ease the seat back. Good night!".
This was before 1984 and Panama, obviously.

He also has a reference to using the WACF album and using it with some "vegetable matter" to get the seeds out.

    It's hilarity
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Pacfan, VH played the Hampton Coliseum on Halloween night, 1982, so he must have interviewed DLR at the same venue both times. Would love to hear the interviews. I have several interviews recorded on cassette and 8track tape (yes, 8 track) that I have not listened to in years.

LOL. 8 Track was so funny when I was a kid. We had a stereo that had an 8 Track feature but we never really used it. One year my parents got us the Star Wars soundtrack on 8 Track. It really sucked to not be able to fas-tforward or rewind. We used it once.

When he had Hagar on last year, Alan mentioned what a jerk Alex was to interview back in the day. Likely when he was blitzed most of the time.

He's done that line from Panama a few times over the years - pre 1984! I think he says it on the Chicago 1980 interview or maybe the Florida one? Can't remember.

I always loved the '79 Seattle KISW band interview the best. They were so obnoxious and, above all, hilarious. Like a fuckin' comedy team.

Is that the one where there's a poster of so-and-so on the wall and it sends DLR into high pitched squeaks? Man I remember listening to that ages ago and now I can't find it anywhere!

    I don't think. That doesn't ring a bell.

Starting about 14 minutes, it's what's on my East Coast Live tape from 82 or 83. Handelman must have just used old interviews to do that show.

Well, it's just the funny/crazy/high DLR/VH interviews that us old-school VH fans remember back in the early days, if you could actually catch them. Growing up in a suburb of Milwaukee, I would record hours of radio on cassette just to capture gems like the one above in relation to the announcement that VH may be doing some sort of interview on the radio in the coming times.

Funny that I ended up in NC (Handelman) many years later, and that this stuff is still funny to listen to...

They did an interview on "Rockline" in the early 80's where they took callers on air that was pretty funny.

One segment where the interviewer quotes Dave saying something like "Dave, people are always asking me how far I've come. And the real question is, how often?"

    Or something along those lines...

I remember on the VH East Coast Live special on Halloween, they had interviews from different times with all of VH, and when Alex was on he told this joke:

What's black, white and red all over, and can't get through a revolving door?

A nun with a spear through her head.
