    Default Question for US Vets

I'm in the process of doing a little digging for a good friend. Her Grandfather was a WWII US Army Vet. Saw action in N. Africa and Italy. He passed away before she was born and she knows very little about him, both in and out of the service. I have some basic info and I've started to poke around on Google/yahoo, some sites.

Can you recommend some sites/places where I can find info that the Army/Gov't has on him,

    Thanks,

    E.

I'm a vet but don't really know of a site for that. Let me ask my bro who is a CDR in the Navy. He might have an answer.

Some direct links based on that Ancestry.com site and many more options...

    Elwood,

Your friend can go to this site and request a copy of his DD 214 (Military Service Record):

So it's got to be a relative requesting it? I can't go in there and get it? Thanks

Well knowing just his name and the unit he was in, I've been able to find some stuff. This guy, my friend's Grandfather, was the commanding officer, as a major, then Lt. Col., of the 804th Tank Destroyer Battalion. They saw alot of action in Europe, lost alot of guys. He passed away before she was born.

She told me a story that had been passed along to her. I'm just sharing it here. On New Years Day 1942, her Grandmother was visiting her husband, my friends GF, in San Luis Obisbo, which is between San Diego and LA right on the coast. She was staying a hotel on the coast since they weren't allowed on base. All night long she heard explosions just off shore (depth Charges). She spent the night under her bed. In the morning she saw uniformed US soldiers carrying bodies that had washed ashore. She was told that they were Japanese soldiers that had been on a sub that had been sunk.

Irrelevant clarification: Between San Francisco and L.A. San Luis Obispo is north of L.A. up the 101 about halfway to SF.
