Default Why can't VH sound like this?

The police were my "other" favorite band growing up along with zeppelin and hte cars. But just was listening to live footage of some of the comeback tours.

    The police still have it.

I was amazed when looking up ages they are 10 years older than VH. Andy Summers as young as he looks is 70 years old. Sting and Copeland are both 60. They didn't do as many drugs? What is it? As much as i've enjoyed the reunion i don't think VH sounds nearly as good.

I guess this is a lesson to all you kids out there. Don't smoke. Don't drink. Don't do drugs. Drugs are bad mmmkay.

For years there were a few bands that I never got to see live and never thought I would, two of them were The Police and Van Halen with Dave. Miracles do happen because I have seen both now!! And both bands put on a hell of a show!! Now if only Led Zeppelin would tour...

Luck of the draw in the gentic crapshoot as much as anything. I'd guess the Police never partied as hard or as much as the VHs of the world, but then look at Sammy, he's the oldest of the VH alumni, parties as hard as anyone (I guess) and looks better than the lot of them. Some guys are Ronald Reagan, others are Marlon Brando.

That said, most of what I've seen of the latest VH tour is just unwatchable.
Love these guys, too, but damn a lot of what I've seen is just excruciating.
The Police definitely aged more gracefully in terms of their live presentation.

Well, for one The Police are actually singers, and compare well to Sammy who is also a singer. Dave is more of a frontman and was never going to be confused with the vocal authority of Freddie Mercury. Rock singers tend to lose their voice as they age because of the strain they put on their voice and because, frankly, they don't take care of it.

Sammy is kind of an anamoly, really. He screams and yells like a rock singer but has kept his range for the most part. Still, you can tell he sounds older these days.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Being a heavy smoker is to blame for many vocalists losing their voice.

DLR is a prime example, and there are many others.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I think thats mostly an act with Sam. I've never thought he was this big tequila drinking/up all night kinda guy..i have no proof to back that up, just my observation.

If Sting were singing songs in the style of DLR for 35 years, he wouldn't sound good anymore either.

I do agree on the smoking/drinking/drugging thing though. That never leads to anywhere good. Don't smoke at all, a couple cold ones on a hot summer night won't kill ya, and stay away from the illegal addicting thingamajigs. Thank whoever you may believe in that Ed wasn't a lead singer. He'd sound worse than Marianne Faithful singing backup for Metallica.

    Sam's just into having fun.

I think for many guys, including VH back in the day, it was also treated like a competitive sport.

Why can't Van Halen sound like the Police? Because they're not The Police? There are a hundred bands from VH's peak era that sound great still when they play live. How many are still playing and selling out arenas? One or 2.
Someone else said most of what they'd seen from the 2012 VH tour is "unwatchable." What?? I just don't understand. Wtf?

More than you'd think (depending on, of course, what you'd call VH's peak)

    KISS
    Rush
Motley Crue (minus Vince Nailsonachalkboard, the bands still sounds phenomenal)
Bon Jovi (Sold out Gillette Stadium in 2009)
ACDC (Also sold out Gillette Stadium in 2009)
    Def Leppard
    Iron Maiden
    Judas Priest

All of those bands for the last 30 years (give or take a couple years here and there) have consistently put 7,500 or more asses in seats year after year. And all of those bands I've seen at least once since 2007. They all sound amazing still.

I think VH gave us a studio album that is better than anything the other comeback bands came up with. The cars album is pretty good though. I think where VH's age shows is in the live stuff though. I don't mean to offend anyone but Dave can sound downright awful live to me. His whole stage persona is eh to me as well. He just looks dated. Something is missing there. I think police still have that stadium sound that just sounds professional to me where it just carries. The cars can't really do that either so it's not just VH.

What's amazing to me is i was going back to 1984 the other day and was listening to all these older bands in their prime. It's still amazing to me how each band sounds so unique and has their own sound. That's just not something you find these days. The song structure everything is just so original. Music has definately devolved imo. Even songs that weren't big hits. I was listening to stranger eyes by the cars. Who comes up with stuff like that nowadays? No one. Yeah I'm old but I don't care. I got to hear that stuff and I wish more people did as well.

I think listening to older live stuff, the police still have that stadium sound though. Even Sting's voice has dropped a bit but they definately sound the closest to how they did back then imo. This is where i miss Hagar in ways. I think his voice could still carry in a large stadium moreso than Dave. I think Eddie is using a lot of effects on his guitar now as well to cover up some deficiencies vs that raw untouched talent he used to display. I think his finger speed and accuracy has dropped a notch. He still has it but it's dropped a bit where it's noticeable. Dave i'm not really sure if he has it live. I think the tour was cut short because Dave just couldn't do it anymore.

The cars can kind of get away with smaller shows. VH has always been about being big where it's more noticeable for them when there is a dropoff. I would liken eddie's dropoff to andy summers. It's really not that big a deal. He still sounds great. It's just 10 years earlier.

The Cars look like old men who have seen too much lol. The police look like 50 year olds. Middle aged. No big deal. Whatever they are doing, I think i'm going to try that. I know they've always been into more health consciious stuff.

I thought Def Leppard sounded like shit when I saw them last.

Joe Elliott has lost his voice as much or more than DLR has. There is about zero power left in his voice, it is a struggle for him to get out any volume.

Paul Stanley can't sing any more either, and Brian Johnson never could sing, he could just scream, and now he can barely do that.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

What has killed Dave's voice anyways? Is it smoking? I know people say he's always sounded like crap live but there is a noticeable difference. I know it's been shot for longer than these tours. It seems like he lost his voice a long time ago. I know he smoked or whatever until the 90's or something? But Paul McCartney smokes doesnt he?

It seems to vary from show to show from song to song as well. The show will start off great. Dave will sound great. His personalily really shines. Then a couple songs Dave will start losing his voice. You can see him laboring too. I give him credit. He knows it and pulls through like a true professional. But it's not pretty sometimes.

It's frustrating because there are defiantely moments where it all comes together for this band and they are as good as ever. He should see a voice specialist or something.

    DLR still smokes now.

He's been a smoker for probably forty years, and I think the fact that he was never trained, did all the screams, and then on top of it abused his vocal chords with smoke has had a dramatic impact on his voice, and not for the better.

Yeah, he's lost his voice, at least in my opinion. Love the album, and I had a great time at the show, but he really is not a good vocalist anymore, and that is coming from someone who is a DLR fan.

The show that is up on VHND right now, he founds pretty bad, and in most videos he does. Compare that to Brian Johnson up above, who still sounds like, well, Brian Johnson.

(disclaimer - I like all of those bands)

Ok, so I forgot AC/DC and Rush in my hurry to post. Aerosmith is still doing pretty well too. However I will counter with these points from the others you mentioned.

Kiss - doesn't draw anymore by themselves (and barely sell with Motley)

    Motley Crue - see above

Bon Jovi? I don't really include them for various reasons.

Def Leppard - certainly does NOT sell 7500 tickets a night. I've been to a show that they called everyone down from the rafters to the floor. Barely over 2000 that show. And that was 12-15 years ago.

Do Iron Maiden and Judas Priest still sell out arena after arena in the US? Again, I've been to an Iron Maiden show with an attendance of maybe 3000, again 10 years ago.

My point was that no one RIGHT NOW, from VH's heyday with the exception of a few are doing what VH did this year. Not Leppard, not Kiss, not Motley or Priest or Maiden. (or Comet or Blitzen)
And none of those can or will sell 400,000 records in the US or 800,000 worldwide. Half of those bands sound GREAT. Aside from a lot of complaints about Dave, they sound amazing and are playing as well as they have in almost 20 years. They still pack in the crowds. And that is AFTER all the shit, self inflicted and otherwise, that has gone on with them. People are forgetting already, how great an accomplishment it's been.
