Interesting to see VH so high on that list. It's surprising that Crazy Train or Welcome to the Jungle aren't included.

I've heard "Right Now" at more sporting events than "Jump."

And why aren't "Crazy Train" and "Welcome to the Jungle" there?

Just the opposite with me. I've heard "Jump" at TONS of MLB baseball and NFL games all over the midwest especially back in the 80's. Also have heard Runnin with the Devil and Panama several times too.

My thoughts exactly about "Right Now," "Crazy Train" and "Welcome To The Jungle..." It's a suspect list -- esp. if it's a N. America only list -- hell, it's written by a Brit who openly praises Spandau Ballet, (and published in Canada.)

I hear "Right Now" played at almost every close Celtics game, (either that or "In The Air Tonight" to set a 'this is tense/important' mood.) Boston Garden plays "Jump" at almost every jump ball (or "Jump Around" by House of Pain) -- and the drum/guitar intro to "Hot For Teacher" throughout the game to create crowd frenzy.

My family has season tickets to the Patriots, and Foxboro plays the riff from "You Really Got Me" to psych up the crowd.

Van Halen, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Guns 'N Roses, and The Beatles... And a bunch of horrible dance music... (And Bon Jovi at Patriots games, due to Bill Belichick's friendship with Jon) = most sports events I've been to in the US.

I'm not maliciously busting balls. I know VH hasn't ventured beyond North America in a long time but it's funny that a few people were saying how little known VH is around the world and how little they have ever promoted themselves overseas.... and here is a Online Magazine from the United Kingdom where VH is listed #1 in a poll and another thread has a FW era promo vid from Spanish TV.

That was also in 1982 when they actually cared enough to promote themselves down there.

CVH did stuff like that all over the world. It's cool VH are hitting Japan this time out. Wonder if they will spread it to other regions.

    That list is wrong

That list is wrong, it doesn't even have that stupid pedophile " Gary Glitter " s song on it. It must be based on soccer games in Europe. I've never heard half of those songs at any game I've seen.

Not many songs written about sports, except John Fogerty' hit " centerfield ", and the top selling hit album from Huey Lewis titled " Sports " in 1987.

Not exactly your everyday garden-variety fan is it? Just sayin.

Now, if this was a poll of your average fan in the UK asking them their favorite sporting song, then yeah, it would mean something.

I've never heard the majority of these songs at a UK sporting event either - especially not Jump!

I think the timing of it all is humorous and as an American fan it's cool to see VH got love in this little UK based poll.

or... you could look at it the other way. if it was some poll of average fans, what would that prove? some fans go to one type of event once a year, or have season tickets and/or see lots of different events.... some just remember what they overheard thru the TV, some attended live where they get more during time outs... some are just internet users, "average fans" voting in the poll for songs they like.... we'd never know.

so this poll at least speaks to what is actually being licensed and put into use and how many times.

that said, if your point was that Jump being #1 doesn't mean "VH is popular all over the world!" then you're right, it doesn't prove that. just means that song gets used a LOT.

also, agree about Welcome to the Jungle and Crazy Train....

also, this MUST mean that "Seven Nation Army" is being used too often without permission or else it would surely be on this list. (It would, and stop calling me Shirley). or, crowds are chanting the riff.... but the stadiums aren't all playing (and paying for use of) the song. I'd say the omission of "Seven Nation Army" seems pretty odd...

PRS for Music's Top 20 sporting songs are:

    1. Jump – Van Halen
    2. Start Me Up – Rolling Stones
    3. Higher & Higher – Jackie Wilson
    4. Gold – Spandau Ballet

    6. Wake Me Up! – Wham!
    7. The Winner Takes It All – Abba
    8. Silver Machine – Hawkwind
    9. We Are the Champions – Queen
    10. Shine – Take That
    11. Tracks of My Tears – Smokey Robinson
    12. The Long & Winding Road – The Beatles
    13. Eye of the Tiger – Survivor

    18. Don't Stop Believin' – Journey
    19. Chariots of Fire (Theme)
    20. We Will Rock You – Queen
