Default Anti-Gay Stance Is 'Insult' To City

Mumbles Menino wants everyone to be tolerant of all types of people, opinions, and lifestyles...... But he's against being tolerant of an opinion he doesn't like. So be tolerant, unless it's something you don't like, is that the lesson here? Maybe the elderly mayor should concentrate on the MAJOR crime problem in "his" city.

Can you imagine if it was a letter from a Mayor not allowing Starbucks into the city because they support Gay Marriage? This letter can be spelled out in one word = DISCRIMINATION.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1703770.html
The media firestorm over Chick-fil-A's financial contributions to anti-gay organizations seems to have no end in sight.

Now, after Boston Mayor Thomas Menino vowed to block the fast food chain from opening a franchise in his city, a letter penned by the Massachusetts lawmaker to Chick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy has surfaced in the blogosphere. That letter, which was posted to Boston's official Facebook page and has since been picked up by a number of media outlets including Towleroad, is dated July 20 and reads as follows:

"In recent days you said Chick-fil-A opposes same-sex marriage and said the generation that supports it has an 'arrogant attitude.'

Now -- incredibly -- your company says you are backing out of the same-sex marriage debate. I urge you to back out of your plans to locate in Boston."

    It continues:

"You called supporters of gay marriage 'prideful.' Here in Boston, to borrow your own words, we are 'guilty as charged.' We are indeed full of pride for our support of same-sex marriage and our work to expand freedom to all people. We are proud that our state and our city have led the way for the country on equal marriage rights...

There is no place for discrimination on Boston's Freedom Trail and no place for your company alongside it."

Menino's letter is merely the latest twist in what has become a public relations debacle for the Atlanta-based fast food chain, with both marriage equality supporters and opponents sounding off in equal response to the controversy.

Last week, the Jim Henson Company announced it was severing its partnership with Chick-fil-A over Cathy's professed anti-gay stance, while celebrities like "Hangover" star Ed Helms and "Glee" actor Grant Gustin have expressed their distaste for the fast food company.

On the other hand, former GOP presidential candidates Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee have been outspoken in their support for Cathy and the franchise. Huckabee even encouraged people to patronize the fast food chain on Aug. 1, which he deemed "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day."

Though Chick-fil-A's contributions to "traditional family" organizations like Exodus International and the Family Research Council have been well-reported for some time, the latest media onslaught began following remarks Cathy made in a July 16 Baptist Press interview. When writer K. Allan Blume pressed Cathy, who is the son of company founder S. Truett Cathy, about his company's contributions to those established anti-gay organizations, he responded, "Well, guilty as charged."

He continued, "We are very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that...we know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles."
"The less I needed, the better I felt." ~ Charles Bukowski.

Good on the Cathy family for sticking to what they said. Although insensitive, the stand behind it.

Just the same, good on the Mayor of Boston for taking a stand as he saw fit. Admirable too. Nothing illogical here regardless of personal opinions on the matter.

I love Chick-fil-A and they will continue to get my business. I applaud them for standing up for what they believe in. The north east doesn't deserve the awesomeness that is Chick-fil-A anyway.

If I shopped at places that only supported libertarian causes, I'd be screwed. Ultimately, I don't care. I have friends who will no longer eat at Chick Fil A and friends who rid their house of all things Muppets. I think it's pretty silly, but I think tolerance is also being tolerant of intolerance, so whatever. Here comes the crazy libertarian in me, but I think if Chick Fil A didn't wanna serve gays or whomever, then that's their right as a private company not to. If they started doing that, however, I would rethink ever eating there. That's the beauty of the type of liberty we should have. They should have the freedom to do that, and I should have the freedom to agree, disagree, protest it, or not care. I'm not saying I AGREE with them doing it, I'm just saying discrimination is discrimination whether it's CFA not serving gays, Hooters not hiring fat, ugly, and/or small-breasted women as servers, casinos not hiring cocktail waiters, or me walking into a club and not hitting on the women I don't find attractive or interesting.

That's pie in the sky, however.

When you think of marriage as part of your religious freedom, and the government is what sanctions a legally-recognized marriage, I don't think it's an unreasonable position to disagree with government-sanctioned gay marriage if your religion is vehemently against it. The implication is that a straight, religious, legal marriage is on the same level as a marriage they find an abomination because they cannot go outside of the government to get a legally-recognized marriage. Because of this, I have no current problem with CFA.

The other side essentially says that the religious that are against it (or anyone else for that matter) don't own the monopoly on marriage, nor should they be able to dictate what marriage is, especially considering the historical concepts of marriage. If a gay couple want to call their long-time, committed relationship a marriage and have it be legal with all the rights of heterosexual marriage, then who is anyone to stop them? The country is set up to protect the rights of the minority against the majority. Because of this, I also have no problem with the Muppets either.

As we can see--and as a libertarian, cards on the table, I'm fine with gay marriage--there's a common denominator: the government.

I believe if the government stops sanctioning this, most of this goes away. No one on either side, then, can try and use the government to legislate what they believe a word means and represents. Christian couple A can have their marriage ceremony at their church, live together, and have the relationship they want and gay couple B can have whatever ceremony they want (or don't) and have the relationship that they want. Here's the first dirty secret: it's happening now. I have friends that are in a committed relationship and they live together, love the shit out of each other, do not find men attractive, and call each other their wife. They don't need the government to tell them it's okay in a free country, and here's the neither do the second dirty secret: neither does anyone else.

Maybe then the Muppets and Chick Fil A could live in harmony and liberty...

What I don't get is, hasn't it been known that Chic-fil-A has these kinds of views? Why are people acting so shocked now?

Yeah, I feel like I've known this for years. I had a girlfriend who was incredibly liberal in her political approach and did protest things but never protested Chick-Fil-A. She really liked the food, and we got into an interesting discussion over their anti-gay stance.

We broke up last August, so I swear this has been public knowledge for awhile if I was talking about it a year ago. The press was late to the party.

Chick-Fil-A will no longer be getting my business. Not like they did anyway; kinda gross by my estimation.

RIP Chic-fil-A All of their employees can soon apply for unemployment at an already broke state near yours soon!

pretty stupid move by the mayor. Nothing like telling people who want to invest in your city that you don't want their money.

That's what I don't get either. They've been giving money to anti-gay groups like Focus on the Family for years. Why the outrage now?

For my part, I like their food although I only go there once or twice a year. That won't change for me because of this.

Honestly, if I stopped utlizing the services of companies run by conservative douchebags, I could be in some trouble!
