    Default Guide to Wolfgang guitars?

Is there a guide somewhere to the various years and models of Wolfgang guitars? I'm looking at one for sale on Craigslist and I'm not sure how to value these things. I know there are differences between models and I think there are also USA-made vs. Korean-made ones? Is that right?

I wrote (actually RE-wrote) about 85% of this page. I can guarantee its accuracy.

After reading the wiki page, I'm sure 85% is a conservative estimate... BTW, I knew you couldn't resist addressing the "standard" and "deluxe" terms...lol...

What's a good used price for one of the Korean-made ones, assuming it is in good shape and has no issues?

I have to partially disagree..I have an EXP and, after a few upgrades, slays the Fender EVH Wolfgang Special Tobacco Burst at my local retailer. Just my opinion, of course, but there are always good and bad examples of ANY guitar....the 1/2 dozen EVH Wolfgangs I've tried out (Standards & Specials) have seriously underwhelmed me, for the price they charge, IMO.

The new Fender built special I played at GC in south Austin seemed to be put together very well for it's pricepoint, but it felt somewhat sterile to me.

There may be decent EXP's out there, but I would never own one since US specials can be had for so cheap these days... I see the cheesy ass veneer top EXP's sometimes selling for more than the US specials... WTF??? I guess there's a sucker born a minute...

OK, I'll look to avoid the EXP then. I've read the wiki page a few times looking for the most obvious "tell" that you're looking at a korean-made model. It looks like the Grover mini-tuners are the most obvious give-away? Are they marked Grover or anything? I am not very familiar with guitar hardware and what differences to look for.

    Yes,
Grovers have their name on the tuners. They are a great tuner, IMO. Keep your eyes peeled and you can usually find a Peavey Wolfgang Special for great prices. Try Craigs List, and if you find one, go and play it first before buying. I've been tempted to get my old Chreame Wolfy back from my brother. Played AWESOME, and great tone...looked great as well.
Eddie must think I'm a BOZO to want to drop THAT much on one of his new Charvel Guitars!

    Default EVH Wolfgang set-up

My first post, but long time lurker, so before I get going I just want to say 'thanks' to all those that own, moderate and contribute to VHlinks.

I was going to start a new thread, but can't do that, so apologies for quasi-hijacking this one (it was the closest I could find).

Anyway, I have a question regarding the recommended set up of the Wolfgang guitar and the corresponding guidance provided in the owner’s manual.

The owner’s manual states that when you fret the instrument at the 1st fret and at the body/neck joint, the space between the top of the 8th fret and the bottom of the string should not exceed 0.010 mm.

Do you think that 0.01mm is correct?  I have a good set of feeler gauges, but none of those get even close to being as thin as 100th of a millimeter.

I can’t imagine many people have the equipment to measure such a small gap.  This leads me to wonder if it is a typo and should be 0.1 mm, rather than 0.01 mm.  Another possibility is that the measurement was originally in inches, as 0.01 inches equates to around 0.25 mm.

As a comparison, the Peavey Wolfgangs had recommended gap of 0.1mm to 0.2mm.

For the record, I am happy setting up a guitar and am not a slave to the factory specs; I'm just curious to know if they actually expect people to measure 0.01mm.

In reply to my own question.

I contacted EVH Support and got a reply from Michael Roberts of FMIC. Here is his response:

This must be a typo as this is just unobtainable. We have spec’d these out ourselves while doing setups to the same spec as Jackson guitars which is measured at the 7th fret at .007”-.008”. This neck relief is measured with first and last fret depressed (usually with a capo on the first and your other hand for the last).

The action height still utilizes the capo at the first fret still with the measurement taken at the 17th fret with 4/64” on the bass side and 3/64” on the treble side (bottom of string to top of referenced fret).

So there you go; don't try and achieve the impossible 100th of a mm.

I really like the Wolfgang, but do think it's a shame that manufacturers of signature equipment invest lots of time/effort in to 'production', but then seem to ignore 'performance'.

Why isn't there a video of Eddie's guitar tech walking through the set-up of a Wolfgang? Why isn't there a video of Eddie dialling in some tones on a Wolfgang and a 5150 50w?

And for the record, I'm not having a go at EVH (get well soon, BTW), as I've had other signature models and it is the same story with them.

Anyway, rant over, and hope the set-up info is useful for someone.
