    Default Deep Purple

    From Associated Press
    July 16, 2012 2:14 PM EDT

LONDON (AP) — British rocker Jon Lord, former keyboardist for the band Deep Purple, has died. He was 71 years old.

A statement on Lord's official website says the Leicester, England-born musician suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism in London on Monday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Lord co-wrote some of Deep Purple's most famous tunes, including "Smoke on the Water," and later had a successful solo career following his retirement from the band in 2002.

The statement posted on Lord's website said he died "surrounded by his loving family."

Incredible rock keyboardist, may he R.I.P. Saw Deep Purple during the Perfect Strangers tour at the Spectrum in Philly. Friend and I decided to go at the last minute, made it to Philly in his '71 Chevelle SS at an absurdly high rate of speed on the PA Turnpike and bought tickets to the show in the parking lot. He really added that special element to the D.P. sound. He could make that Hammond grind just like a rhythm guitar or play incredible solos which were complimentary to Blackmore's riffs. Going to have to listen to some Deep Purple tonight in place of the customary ADKOT.

    Well that's just Sad !

Deep Purple had some amazing musicians in the band --- all the way around ! !

I remember listening to my first Deep Purple album, Machine Head, as a Jr. in High School in 1972.

What impressed me most from that LP was the keyboard work in the great tune "Lazy". That was easily my favorite track off that album from the get-go.

Thanks Jon for all the great things you accomplished in your lifetime --- You went too soon ! ! !

I always loved Jon Lord, an incredible musician and from all indications that I ever saw a really good guy, too. I just saw the news a minute ago and it's really sad.

The only time I saw Deep Purple live was in 1985 when they headlined the Texxas Jam. I was 17 and the all-day show blew me away. I still have my t-shirt from the show. Scorpions were awesome, too. And my ears still haven't fully recovered from Nugent, that was the loudest thing I've ever heard. I couldn't even tell one chord from another, it was like white noise from the volume.

Dream Theater dedicated their show in Boston tonight to Jon. Its hard to imagine Jordan Rudess without Jon Lord. The Spirit Carries On....RIP!

Very sad. The Mount Rushmore of Keyboards only has three heads, and those would be Wakeman, Tony Banks, and Lord.

    Devastating. RIP.

Bummer. Wasn't aware of his condition.

While I could never want to hear Smoke on the Water again, I even liked some of the last few resords they did with Steve Morse. I think they aged about as gracefully as any rock band can - especially for a 70s pomp-rock band- without aping their youth or going embarassingly country or adult-contemporary. Ian Gillan is in great form lyrically on that stuff. As is Jon.

    RIP, my Lord.

Agreed, I've got a bunch of their modern live dvds from the past dozen years or so and a few of their newer albums like Bananas and they were always in top form. Deep Purple, like Yes, seemed to have literally dozens of individual lineups over the decades for albums and tours but I still find something to like with those bands regardless of the specific players at the time. But for the older era there still isn't much that touches Made in Japan for me. Even Smoke on the Water doesn't get tiring for me on that album. I liked Jon's stuff with Whitesnake, too.

He was the king of the keys , my personal favorite for sure. He will will be missed.

" LAZY " pretty much says it all , and one of my all time favorites.

He recently did a special jam with Bruce Dickenson and Ian Anderson in a church in England for some sort of charity, which can be seen on you tube.

DON AIREY is also pretty good , as I saw DEEP PURPLE here recently , and always enjoyed the intro to " Mr.Crowley " from OZZY.

This cancer sure is a bitch , to say the least. It is very sad to lose RONNIE JAMES DIO ( R.I.P. ) , as well. Also another one of my favorites that was taken too soon.

Even though death is a dark subject , for most people , you could look at the bright side being , these great artist's music will keep their spirit alive forever.

It's also good that this horrible cancer disease hasn't won yet , and many will beat it.
Of course , I'm referring to EDWARD VAN HALEN , and hope TONY IOMMI will be o.k. too.

    R.I.P. JON LORD
