Default Was it a good idea or a bad idea for VH not to do Promo vids for 5150

I just watched Dave's Yankee Rose and Goin Crazy vids and it got me thinking was vh right or wrong for not doing promo vids for 5150? I mean in all honesty Mtv was all over the band in 86 even though the band really didn't seem very interested in using them to promote themselves via music video. Unleashed was a great special and they played the hell out of the Blue Angels video for Dreams. I remember that summer watching Mtv all day and every hour they would either have yankee rose or dreams on. Then Mtv really aired the hell out of the live performances of Love Walks In and Best of Both Worlds....

anyway what do you guys think? I think it was a pretty good idea for them to do it like they did, they were not gonna put out anything like the old video's and it got people out there to see them live, the 5150 tour was the 2nd highest grossing tour of 86 (I think). 5150 was a huge album but would a "real" video have pushed it along more? Bands like Poison and Cinderella sold 2-3 million records at one point just cause they were Mtv's darlings.

    discuss.

My head is still very foggy today lol but from my recollection they had a video for Dreams, they had a mtv behind the scene special or something that aired a few times and after LWAN came out a few of the tunes were played on MTV in their rotation.

They wanted to make sure they differentiated the band from what they were with DLR.

I think it was a smart move, let the music do the talking.

The album went #1 and sold 5 million copies, so it couldn't have been a bad decision.

At the time I was pissed about it, but it seems to have been the right thing to do, just releasing live clips. At the time, releasing a single without a video was considered a stupid thing to do. But to ape the style of the Hot For Teacher video with a new guy at the mic singing some 5150 tune would have led to comparisons Van Halen wouldn't want.

As great as Sam is in VH, DLR is the one who works best in those video situations and is the more charismatic man.

they had decided not to do videos so there weren't any comparisons between old and new Van Halen, and wanted to show the band live so they had WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE and BEST OF BOTH WORLDS done Live, in the end they sold 6 million albums, which seems like it was a good desision but who knows maybe if they had done a video for DREAMS they would have sold 10 million !

Those "promo videos" are enormously expensive and it's 100% recoupable. So if a band can make videos for next to nothing and sell six million copies then they made the right decision.

I remember David Coverdale being very critical after the fact that he was essentially forced to make those videos in the lat 80's and they were incredibly expensive. For sure those videos play a big part to increase promotion, but in the end it's the band who foots the bill and the record company carries none of the expense. I can see how it would piss me off if I had to fork out 1 million dollars to make a video that is not really going to make me any money after all is said and done but will ultimately benefit the record company.

I remember a band complaining because their A&R/ record company would "throw them a party to celebrate" but on paper it was really expensed back to the band. So easy to spend someone else's money.

Also, I think it was bold NOT to do a video, especially when MTV was at it's zenith. The album still sold like hotcakes. Curiosity factor AND quality music.

Not only that. Big budget concept videos do more to boost CD sales thus likely only benefiting the record company directly. A move toward exciting live videos does indeed let the fan know that "once you see this video, you'll want to come to the show even more". Most bands still take show revenue towards paying the record company off sooner though.

It sold tons, may have sold tons more if they made videos.

Also should have released Dreams first. That would have helped sell more too.

I think it was a good move on their part. Like someone else said, it let the music do the talking. I was looking forward to vids too, but I remember being more thrilled when the live clips off the tour, and the Unleashed deal came out. I found it far more entertaining anyway. The Unleashed special was great, and I still love watching it on YT.
That said, it was kind of a bold move for them to not do a typical in a time when MTV and video in general was was at it's peak.

In my perfect world the releases would have been: Good Enough, Summer Nights and 5150, then maybe Dreams (The strongest keyboard track on the album.).

Why Can't This Be Love is one of the worst VH songs of all time IMHO. God, I was so disappointed when I heard it on the radio for the first time. It took a while to get past it and dig into the other great playing on that record.

It's funny how different people's tastes can be - it's my second favourite VH track, after "Dream Is Over" - and, aside from "Jump", it's the only one my mates recognise.
