    Default Wolfgang's Bass Tapping

The more I listen to ADKOT ... and watch Youtube live videos... the more I've been impressed by the writing which has included bass tapping in a few of the songs. This is completely new territory for VH... and haven't seen much discussion about it (unless I missed it).

Do you see the next album going more and more the way toward a Sheehan/Vai guitar-bass tapping direction in future writing?

Although it sounds cool if the band went in this direction it would get old fast.

Even as a bass player, I think bass is akin to a strong spice in food; a little is great, too much ruins the whole thing.

ADKOT has the right amount of bass in the mix and being involved in more intricate parts (not just open E eighth notes), as it was severely lacking in most prior Van Halen releases. But you don't want Wolf in a prominent space in the songwriting or in the mix.

Just my opinion, it works for some bands, but not Van Halen.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Thank you. Good points all. Yeah... of course they should serve the song. I completely agree. I don't think they overdid it this time... but wouldn't mind a smidgen more within reason. '-)

    Again thanks for your thoughts.

I can't say I'd want crazy bass-tapping on a true VH record. BUT, I think it'd be very cool if Eddie, Alex, and Wolfgang at some point put out a VH Trio instrumental record where they all just go nuts!

I think that the entire band should tap for the next album. Alex could tap his drum kit and Dave could tap his crotch.

I don't think Ed or Wolf give 'chops' one second of thought. They play for the song, and what happens, happens.

It would have been cool back in 1986. I think Vai/Sheehan, Gilbert/Sheehan pretty much perfected and buried it.

Yeah, Wolf did a great job staying lower in the mix on the album but still displaying a slight amount of prominence on the bass side.

He's not Geddy Lee though, and Van Halen isn't a band that warrants bass wankery or extreme technical prowess (like Rush or Primus). Mike has shown, through solos with Sam and Chickenfoot, that he's a damn good technical bassist. That just wasn't the recipe for Van Halen and it worked really well.

I would love to see Wolf simply keep doing what he's doing, because it has been good enough. Kid's been impressive in 2012.

If Wolf wants to shred, he can start a new project. I'd be more than happy to listen to it.

Like Ed, I'd hope Wolfgang didn't just tap or get busy just for the sake of tapping and playing "lead bass." I think his "lead bass" style is about as busy as it should get at this point. Taste should rule over all, the song, the harmonies, etc. Just do what fits.

The Vai/Sheehan thing is cool, for about three songs, then it gets old IMHO.

I was perfectly happy with adkot and if they make it with the same or similar musical style i would be just as happy but if they go in another direction i would be just as happy as long as they are active and making music i am a supportive fan.
Janie Liszewski did the IMPOSSIBLE she helped Eddie Van Halen get better. Deal with it.
