Default What exactly is going on during Sunday Afternoon in the Park?

I think I used to know but I just listened to it for the first time in awhile and I'm a bit confused. Ed's playing a synthesizer correct? I know this might be a dumb question but I thought I remembered reading that it was just some kind of little noise maker thing he found lying around, it might have actually been some kind of cardboard childrens keyboard thing he found....my memory is totally failing me on this right now...did they ever actually play this (I know mike played it on RHRN-unless my memory is screwed up again) in concert? don't know where my vh encyclopedia is right now.

    sunday afternoon in the park

It's title would have been a good newspaper headline caption for when Dave got popped for weed back then in the big apple.

You are right , there was a guitar magazine interview where Ed said he used some cheap Casio keyboard or something.

They played it every night on the 81 tour , before " Romeo Delight "

It is kind of a neat little ditty , but I was suspicious that it may of been used as something to fill up the album in a hurry. As they had plenty of real songs from the 1977 demo's that they could have used. But that is just a hunch on my part.

The best part is when it turns into " one foot out the door "

    From Val's book,

"Ed told me that I'd inspired the song Sunday Afternoon in the Park, a heavy, grinding instrumental. He said it was us fighting all the time".

wow! That's what inspired it? Given some of the fights I had with my ex...if they were half as bad, Then I admire Ed's restraint naming it that.

Daves inspiration for the lyrics in One Foot Out The Door was Val also.

    Funny that.

    Good one ,

It didn't take Ed and Val very long too start fighting , since the marriage and fair warning happened in the same year.

I believe the keyboard EVH used is an "Electro Harmonix Mini-Synthesizer". It's basically a toy. It has a cardboard backside. And no moving keys. Pretty weird instrument!

Here is more about that synth:

Oh and I forgot to mention that I don't think the keyboard stays in tune too well due to the cheap construction. Here is a good demo video of one:

Yes, and Val's favorite song was Romeo Delight so he played them together in '81 for her. Again, that is from her book.

thanks for the info...I hadn't heard that in awhile and when it came on I couldn't remember for the life of me what was actually going on there. It's a pretty trippy tune, I love One Foot Out the Door, it's just a cool song IMHO.
