Default Super Bowl Bad For Business?

I for one hope they don't do the Super Bowl half time show. It's great publicity, but it could backfire on them big time. I can already the morning drive radio shows tearing them a new one. "Washed up, Wolfie's fat, they're old!, Dave is pathetic, Dave still acts like he's 22, Dave's voice is horrible!"

Dave's voice is the biggest thing that could derail their performance. He sounded really bad the last month of the tour. The band could be ridiculed to the point that this could destroy part of their legacy.

I'd love to see them at the Superbowl, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about Dave. He simply can't get away with sounding like he does on this 3-track soundboard recordings that just found their way online. He'll get ripped apart by the media if he does. VH family would smoke, but Dave REALLY would need to get serious, listen to the songs as they were recorded, learn the words, and ensure their would be no hiccups for one of the most watched televised events during the year...

...but this all still just a rumor remember.

Is there a link to that soundboard recording, by any chance?
If I told the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about what I've gone through over the last 20 odd years, what it took to finally get where I am, people just wouldn't fucking believe it. So it's pointless. I now realize that I can't change people's minds, and I really don't want to or need to try. I'm at peace with it, and that's all that matters. - Edward Van Halen

Who knows if VH will do the Super Bowl ... but the handwringing over Dave's voice is a little over the top. Anyone see Roger Daltrey a couple years ago? How about Pete Townsend with a belly and his shirt coming up? How about the Black Eyes Peas giving possibly the worst halftime performance in recorded history?

I'd much rather have Roth on stage than any of those acts. Particularly Madonna.

Have Dave, Ed, and Wolf pre-record vocals sometime before the SB, and play the instruments live. Open with Ed doing Eruption. Crowd goes nuts. Dave makes the smiley face and points at Ed and raises his hand. They hug, crowd goes nuts again. Into YRGM, then Panama. Give Dave a short rap session telling when they played there last etc etc. during the breakdown of Panama, then Jump, problem solved. This is what all the SB acts do anyway (aside from Bruce I gather) The publicity would be so amazing (good or bad)

The question posed by the OP was whether performing at the Superbowl might be "bad for business" - and I hate to say it but there is every chance it could be...

If Dave's vocals are as bad as has been reported, then far from boosting record and ticket sales, doing the half-time show could even have a negative impact on them AND upon their reputation / legacy - a tarnishing that will long outlast the half hour in which they're on-stage.

However, as I've said before in other threads, my MAIN concern about their possible decision to perform at the Superbowl is how any 'less than glowing' media attention may affect Ed. Yes, he is in a much better place now, health-wise and one can hope that this has improved his outlook on life...But, as we all know from past evidence, he can be quite fragile psychologically-speaking; he doesn't respond well to criticism and, well, not to put too fine a point on it, if the worst DOES happen and the performance gets slated, will this deter him from producing any new music in the future..?

    We'll see...

    get real

VH performing at the superbowl is a great cause for CELEBRATION .

WHO CARES about possible bad reviews ? They have both had plenty during the past 40 years and I dont think they would cry about it , since they are both big time show business millionare musicians and appear to be more than quite happy this year.

I love Van Halen. I do not care what "the media" thinks. Your Mtvs of the world already tell what to think is cool. One shouldn't allow a bunch of squares to dictate what would be awesome in my opinion.

Uh... U2, Springsteen, Prince... just to name a few. And regarding Bono, he's had some awful shows with horrible singing in the past. Plus, there's many major acts who've suffered through critically panned Superbowl performances and lived to tell the tale. I mean, Madonna's career hasn't disappeared, has it?

So it can be done, kiddies.

So much drama over the Super Bowl halftime show? I don't even watch it, I change channels for a half hour. It's just never mattered to me.
