    Default Chinatown

Im not much of a musician...i have tried my hand at guitar and bass but never committed myself to getting better anyway after listening to Chinatown with my ears focused on the guitar one time then i would listen to the bass and drums ignoring vocals and guitar and i cannot get over how difficult this song must be to play at any of the instruments. One part in particular is the outro where it sounds to me like two guitars going.

So for the actual musicians out there maybe you guys could elaborate more on this no matter what you are guitarist bassist or drummer
Janie Liszewski did the IMPOSSIBLE she helped Eddie Van Halen get better. Deal with it.

The day is dunzo lets have some funzo- DLR AS IS

Somedays you're the dog Somedays you're the hydrant- DLR Bullethead

It's not who you squeeze but who returns to squeeze you, no doubt, love em all I says let cupid sort em out!

What is going on in the "outro" is generally the same principle as what's going on in the intro. The intro is clearly visible in this video..What Ed and Wolf are doing. They are basically tapping together in unison..on the intro Wolf has a capo on his bass to allow the lick to be pulled off to a higher open note. I don't think he uses it on any other part of the song. I'm sure you can find videos of the ending showing what they are both doing.

The song on bass or guitar isn't something a beginner will play in full well, it's more advanced but it's also not as difficult as it may sound.

For example my guess is most seasoned guitarists here when they were new to the instrument thought the ending tapping of Eruption must be most the difficult thing to play...only it's actually the easiest part of the song once you're comfortable with tapping....which is MUCH easier than the quickly fretted, picked or legato big stretch runs which is a standard in EVH's playing.

EVH's quickly picked big stretch runs and his amazing rhythm playing...the feel and quirky interesting detail he puts into his stuff is actually the hardest aspect of Ed's style to truly duplicate imo. The tapping stuff is the easiest but sounds impressive and cool. So if you decide to dive into the guitar more seriously I think you'll be surprised that some things that sounds crazy aren't as difficult as they appear.

Alright the guitar aspect of the song appears to be answered i would like to get a drummer and bassist perspective of the song. I liked Chinatown when it first came out now i cannot get enough of it.

You don't even need the vocals on this song. It sounds amazing with just the trio.

Don't get me wrong. I like the vocals but if you just listen to the music...it just smokes!
