Default Feds want more people on food stamps

USDA launches radio ads promoting benefits

HATFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture wants more people to sign up for food stamps, and they're spending up to three million dollars to get the word out.

There are more than 150 thousand people in Western Massachusetts already on food stamps, but the federal government wants even more people to sign up.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP is designed to help families struggling to put food on the table.

Andrew Morehouse, the Executive Director of the Western Massachusetts Food Bank says one in three people in Western Massachusetts or about 70,000 people are not taking advantage of it.

Moorehouse said, "In these hard times people are finding that any little bit helps and families that are really struggling can receive a good chunk of change."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is spending a good chunk of change to let people know about the benefits.

The federal agency has been running radio ads encouraging the elderly, working poor and unemployed to check if they're eligible.

However, some argue food stamps should be something the government should be urging people to get off of not on.

Charlotte Candamil of Chicopee said, “The people who do good and work hard should get the help and I feel like the people who are 18 years old and have dropped out of high school and have five kids and haven't worked a day in their life, they're the ones who should not be receiving it."

Supporters of the program and the ads say there will always be people who try to abuse the system, but for those in need the assistance is a life line.

"Until jobs and other opportunities are restored we have to make that commitment to our neighbors in need," said Moorehouse.

"Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack.” -- Gen. George S. Patton

I sure as hell don't agree with promoting it as the way to go. Just like I don't agree with how fast food is advertised so much. Like it or not, people are going to be mislead. They always have been and they always will be. You shove shit at people so long and they will believe it. Even a lot of the so called independent thinking Republicans.

Foot stamp dependence was expected to start going up even before Obama took office:

I was on WIC in 1985 for about 6 mos when one of my sons was born pre-mature and my x wife had to stay home with him and not work. A social worker suggested I do it. I was reluctant as hell but I did it and we got baby formula and diapers etc. Then Reagan raised the income limits on it and they kicked me off. I worked the whole time about 10 hours a day 5 days a week. And on my days off I did odd jobs for more money. Thats what socialism programs are for and not to depend on.

Not surprising. More people dependent = more votes for those providing them.

USDA partnering with Mexico to boost food stamp participation

The Mexican government has been working with the United States Department of Agriculture to increase participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps.

USDA has an agreement with Mexico to promote American food assistance programs, including food stamps, among Mexican Americans, Mexican nationals and migrant communities in America.

“USDA and the government of Mexico have entered into a partnership to help educate eligible Mexican nationals living in the United States about available nutrition assistance,” the USDA explains in a brief paragraph on their “Reaching Low-Income Hispanics With Nutrition Assistance” web page. “Mexico will help disseminate this information through its embassy and network of approximately 50 consular offices.”

The partnership — which was signed by former USDA Secretary Ann M. Veneman and Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Luis Ernesto Derbez Bautista in 2004 — sees to it that the Mexican Embassy and Mexican consulates in America provide USDA nutrition assistance program information to Mexican Americans, Mexican nationals working in America and migrant communities in America. The information is specifically focused on eligibility criteria and access.

The goal, for USDA, is to get rid of what they see as enrollment obstacles and increase access among potentially eligible populations by working with arms of the Mexican government in America. Benefits are not guaranteed or provided under the program — the purpose is outreach and education.

Some of the materials the USDA encourages the Mexican government to use to educate and promote the benefit programs are available free online for order and download. A partial list of materials include English and Spanish brochures titled “Five Easy Steps To Snap Benefits,” “How To Get Food Help — A Consumer’s Guide to FNCS Programs,” “Ending Hunger Improving Nutrition Combating Obesity,” and posters with slogans like “Food Stamps Make America Stronger.”

When asked for details and to elaborate on the program, USDA stressed it was established in 2004 and not meant for illegal immigrants.
