NAACP Wants Texas Lottery Shut Down to stop poor people from playing

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The Dallas chapter of the NAACP wants to stop seeing low income Texans pumping money into the state lottery by putting it out of business.

In poorer communities, though, the lottery seems to offer the chance at a life otherwise out of reach.

A study paid for by the Texas Lottery Commission says the people most likely to play Pick 3 are those making $20,000 a year or less –– below the poverty line. And people who are unemployed are more likely to buy scratch-off tickets than those who have jobs or retirees, the study found.

David Anderson collects disability but still spends a few dollars a week testing his luck. “It’s up to me, spend this five dollars or should I go buy a loaf of bread and hamburger to feed the kids,’ he said.

But why stop something that’s raking in the money? So far in 2012 Texans have spent more than $3.3 billion in lottery tickets.

“They have this delusion that they’re going to win,” said chapter president Dr. Juanita Wallace. “I want them to shut it down,” she said. “Our people are spending their little money, their life savings away in hopes of winning.” The group voted recently to urge state officials to do away with the lottery.

Just compare the North Dallas Lottery District to the South Dallas Lottery District, where there are a greater percentage of minorities and low income homes.

Not only are people in south Dallas more likely to play the lottery, they spend almost three times as much when they do.

Occasional player, Paul Meupe, says he knows the odds are slim. “I bet if I buy a scratch off right now, I won’t win,” said Paul Meupe.

    He was right; he didn’t.

Anderson, though, said it’s more than just a ticket people are buying, it’s hope.

“The hope that they’re gonna hit and have nothing else to worry about,” he said.

You know the saying: "The lottery is a tax on stupid people."

Maybe if these people took some personal responsibility they wouldn't need to be looked after like this.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Oh, so now they want to have discrimination towards blacks in Texas. I know I get it, they don't want anybody to be able to buy lottery tickets especially poor black people. Guess they don't really realize though what kind of services these poor black folks depend on that may be cut when the state stops taking in 3.3 billion dollars a year.

I don't call it The Lottery anymore.

I call it what it is - The Texas State Dumb Tax.

    Completely voluntary tax, of course.

I get the point here but it's up to the individual to educate themselves in what they're buying and the notion of shutting it down for reasons like this is just silly.

My real beef with the thing is where the money collected is spent now. It was sold to the public as a major way to prop up education but I see no more improvements in our schools as a result. In fact, in some respects, they're worse off now than when the lotto was first put into effect.

And the odds are just astronomically stupid now anyways:

The chance of winning the Texas lottery is: .00000000056911

The probability of getting struck by lightning is: .000032

That's not getting struck by lightning just once in your lifetime but MULTIPLE times.

At the end of the day, if a fun distraction and give you a dream or bit of hope, I see nothing wrong with that...

I guess that's the number! Nine zeros? LOL

Actually I guess it's more clearly stated this way:

    Roughly 26 million to 1.

The lottery is fine, a fool and his money are soon parted.

Legalize dope and prostitution while you are at it and tax the fuck out of it.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

    Default The odds and then....

In my lifetime I've known 3 people who've won a huge cash lottery.

First one was a widowed mom of one of my friends from High School, she won a couple million in the Ohio lottery in early '84. she called into work rich and took off, my friend her son was given the house as she traveled the world (her lifelong dream)... The house became party central in my Senior Year. I saw her for the first time in 25 years at my Mother's funeral. She's still got cash, and has traveled ever since.

Second, is a pharmacy tech from my wife's work, she was again a single mom barely scraping by, with two small children. She won 20 something million from the Texas Lottery in 1995. She opened here own baseball academy...he kids of course, both went onto play Div 1 baseball. They both now coach at the Academy.

Third won 80+ million from the Texas lottery, he was an obnoxious fool beforehand, and sadly the money didn't help his disposition. He is donated quite abit to Baylor and they gave him a paper tiger position that he lords over everyone he comes into contact with, that along with telling everyone who will listen that he won 80+ million form the lottery. Most people walk away scratching their head that he drives such a POS, a Dodge Neon.
