Default want to build Kramer 5150 - UK

    hey guys,

I have decided to give this guitar a go. I have read a couple of online stories about it already so I kind of know what I'm doing. Nevertheless I would highly appreciate any kind of advice or experience from people who have finished such a project already. Now I am living in the UK and my budget is rather on the low side means I cannot afford to import a kit from musikraft or meanstreet. I'm hoping that Uk people could give me some advice on how to keep costs as low as possible aswell

    thanks guys!

Have a look on eBay for something like a Kramer Striker. They're pretty cheap and fairly close to the correct shape (not 100% correct but close enough). Grab a Floyd from GFS and while you're there bag yourself one of their VEH humbuckers. It won't be an exact replica but it'll be close enough and won't break your wallet.

Where abouts in the UK are you?...If you're anywhere near Leicester I'd be more than happy to lend a hand.

I am from Bournemouth and I want to do this in Germany actually :P Ill be with my family for a month there and can use my dad's workbench It is even harder to find parts in Germany so that isn't an option either So yeah everything within the EU would be good to buy actually (apart from Switzerland :P)

Okay guys now I have a problem right from the beginning...

I was bidding on the only 5150 body on ebay yesterday but as shit happpens, I was outbid. No the thing is I could go to musikkraft and let them make me a body but that takes a couple of weeks. I only have 3 weeks left to do this guitar as I will go back after that to my little flat with no room for such a project
So is there anyone of you guys who has a spare 5150 body? That would help me so much, I need to find one in this week and it needs to arrive next week, otherwise I can't do this Thank you!

Okay I have found a body now

next up is the colouring. I have read that dakota red might be the best colour for it. I have found those of ebay:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nitrocellu...item1c1d60cbb5

would that be a good choice?

    thanx

EDIT: and how many cans would I need? It says one can would cover 4-5 coats so that should be enough but tbh I don't really know as I have never done it before :S

Mate, you're over-thinking it. No need to use Nitrocellulose paint, its not what Ed used anyway. Get yourself down to Halfords and pick up some cans of their spraypaint. two coats of each is plenty.
When I built mine I used a VERY light coat of primer over the bare wood and sanded it back with 2000-grit wet & dry (wet) then sprayed two coats of white, two coats of red then finally masked off for the black stripes and did two coats for those aswell.
Leave a couple of days between each colour but remove the masking tape when the paint has gone 'tacky' (roughly 20-30 mins after the last coat, depending on the conditions).
Remove any overspray or runs with a cotton bud dipped in thinners.
Once you've done all 3 colours, leave it to dry for at least a week before building the rest of the guitar.

P.S. It's always a good idea to mock build the guitar before you paint it, just to be sure.

Another tip is to wet the floor of the room you're spraying in if its a garage or similar, that way it reduces the dust and keeps your paint smooth.

Cheers for the hints mate! I thought you would need a special kind of paint. Didn't Ed use Schwin bicycle paint?

It's just spray paint mate, no need for special laquers.

I used Duplicolor for a Frankenstein project and it worked great....not sure if you can get it in the UK.

I found a body on musikraft which was in stock, so thats sorted

I bought a few cans of paint aswell, its car laquer spray paint for wood/metal/plastic etc. so that should work as well

I will constantly update this thread with photos once my parts arrived.

Next up is the pickup... Well I have read quite a lot about this and I think its fair to say that the pu is a mix between a '59 and the custom custom. What would you chose? I am kinda drawn towards the custom custom as the distorted tone is more important to me, I don't care much if it cleans up nicely, which would be cool tho

Thanks, never heard of these. Technically it sounds like the real deal although a lot of people seem to lean towards the custom custom. Its a tough one.

The '59 Hybrid is interesting. I personally think the original 5150 pickup was a slightly overwound '59 with an Alnico II magnet. The Custom Custom will for sure get you in the same ballpark as Ed's 5150 tone.
