    Default 80's Pop Guitarists

I've always loved these players and playing style (could it be considered a genre?) and have really gotten back into the stuff as of late.

The more I listen to 'em lately, the more I realize how genius some of the stuff is, in my book, and think a lot of these guys get overlooked in the grand scheme of the guitar world. They're never really brought up in conversation when it comes to pure talent and creativity so I was curious as to what the rest of the Guitar Room here might have to say in regards to them.

Here's a good list of guys that come to mind:

    Charlie Burchill of Simple Minds

David Rhodes of The Peter Gabriel Band

    Steve Bartek of Oingo Boingo

Kevin Scott MacMichael of Cutting Crew

Michael Hehir of The Corey Hart Band

Michael Gross of Cruel Story Of Youth

    John Spinks of The Outfield

Keith Scott of The Bryan Adams Band

Tim Farriss, Andrew Farriss & Kirk Pengilly of INXS

Ron Strykert of Men At Work

Doug Boyle of The Robert Plant Band

Dominic Miller of The Sting Band

    Jamie West-Oram of The Fixx

    ...and especially:

Steve Farris of Mr. Mister & Tim Pierce of The Rick Springfield Band

Fantastic rhythm playing, those great, mostly clean, chorusy out-of-phase strat tones, punctuated by some really creative, unique lead work. Not to mention some of the riffs are brilliantly creative stuff. I think you get the idea of what I'm talking about...

"20 minutes (late to work)? Shit. Last year I woke up three weeks too late.
My advice is to go for the alien abduction story. Look bemused, dishevelled and on the verge of tears as you recount your story of intrusive and degrading medical tests.
Worked for me anyway. I still have colleagues asking me what it is like to fuck a green womanoid with seventeen breasts.
Alternatively just walk in and inform everyone that alcoholism is indeed a disease and that they should be less judgemental and perhaps a little more supportive."

Absolutely right. Can't believe I forgot. My list is by no means complete. That's kinda the idea here - wondering if I've overlooked any of the guys...

Not sure if these guys fit in the exact genre you're thinking of but both very underrated players who's bands were big in the 80's.

    Elliot Easton- The Cars

    Neil Giraldo -Pat Benatar

I thought of those guys and, yeah, I think they definitely fit the bill. Geraldo is WAY underrated in my book.

I remember reading an interview with Eddie who admitted that he didn't listen much to other bands but he said something along the lines that he really liked the guy from Bryan Adams' band and called him very melodic.

Also I liked the guitar on the song Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey did "Easy Lover" and also on Collins' "Billy Don't You Lose My Number" Daryl something or other was his name.

I'd have to say though that the best guitar from a pop song I heard in the 80's came the song "Beat It", I think his name was Eddie Van Halen. Perhaps you have heard of him? Hmmmmm?

Daryl Stuermer. He was also the touring guitarist/bassist for Genesis.

    Cool Thread

    80's
    Well, I was 18 in 1984
Outside of my hard rock origins, the other stuff is weaved into many good memories
Mick Jones work with The Clash still holds up for me, especially the lesser known tunes
    Same for Dave Evans
Biily Zoom with X screams 80's as far as guitar work back then
    reverb, fat guitar
Geordie Walker with Killing Joke captured that 80's guitar thing, tone & attitude for me
