Default Texas highway would be the first to allow 85 mph speed limit

    Can't drive 55? 65? 75? How about 85?
A stretch of Texas highway may soon be the first road in the country to have a posted 85 mph speed limit.
The Texas Department of Transportation said this week that part of a toll road being built between Austin and San Antonio will be tested to see if motorists can safely push it to 85.
"It was designed under extremely high design parameters," Darren McDaniel, the state's Speed Management Director told WOAI radio.
Texas and Utah are the only states with 80-mph limits on some roadways. But Texas turned heads when lawmakers gave the green light to go to 85 if needed.
"The higher the speed limit, the more accidents there are, the more injuries and the more deaths," Jerry Johns, president of the Southwest Insurance Information Institute, told Reuters last year.
Eighty-five mph would be the second-highest posted speed limit in the world, according to the European auto rental firm Rhino Car Hire, Reuters reported. Some roads in Poland reportedly allow speeds of about 86 mph.
Texas hopes the faster toll road will help relieve one of the country's most congested interstates, between Austin and San Antonio.
"It's in a straight, flat area," TxDOT spokesman Mark Cross told Yahoo. "Safety is a priority. We want to make sure people understand that."

Absolutely all for it. Everything rural here is now 75 and they've done away with the slower truck and nighttime speed limits, as well. The ONE thing I can think of that the government has done right in the past 10 years.

And don't give me that "it'll lead to more crashes and fatalities" malarky. Numerous studies have shown that speed limits like this do not changre the accident or death rates and, if so, actually improve those numbers by freeing up congested traffic.

Proud to be a Texan (for at least this one anyway...)

Back in the summer of '82, my family was driving west through Texas toward Carlsbad Caverns, NM. My dad was cruising at about 80 MPH in our '79 Pontiac Bonneville Brougham. A few times he accelerated to 100-110 MPH, just for the fun of it. There were no towns, cars, or police for endless miles. Lots of cacti, mesas, and armadillos, though.

it's a toll road, though? So you'll have to crank down from 85 to nothing to throw a quarter in the bucket? Have no problem with the speed limits, but toll plazas don't scream "highway safety" to me...

The 85 limit has been set across the board to use as the DOT sees fit, just hasn't been implemented anywhere just yet. I have a feeling that lots of stretches of roads in the western part of the state will be upped to 85 in the near future.

The neat thing about the toll roads around Austin is that you don't have to slow down / stop to pay the toll. You don't even have to have a "toll tag". They just use your license plate # and send you a billing statement for the charges as used. I'm sure they'll do the same with this one.

Having ventured across I-10, they could bump that up to 85. After El Paso, there's a whoooooole lotta nuthin'. Now, having said that, the only thing that "scares" me with the speed limit is how fast a car will come up on a semi-truck. Most companies these days govern the speed on big rigs between 62-68 mph. With a car doing 85, if they're not paying attention, they'll be under the trailer, in a heartbeat ...and they'll be dead. DOT bumpers and trailer tandems are not very forgiving.

The other thing to take in to consideration is the faster the speed, the hotter the tires get. Of you have a car, truck, etc. with questionable/bad tires, a blowout could be catastrophic.

Houston you see them quite often. Around Dallas occasionally. The biggest reason is because of how much more tolls cost for semi's.

According to research done by our AA (Automobile Association), most accidents on motorways are caused by drivers going too slow rather than too fast. Presumably this is because it results in vehicles driving too closely to one another and rash over-taking manouvres. It has actually been suggested that it would be more effective, safety-wise, to implement a minimum speed at which road-users can drive rather than limit maximum speed.

Also, as has been pointed out by another poster, if all vehicles remained at a consistent speed there would be less congestion - and it is worth noting that the majority of accidents on motorways are as a result of a build-up of slow-moving traffic.
