Default Humans Being, Can't Get This Stuff No More, Me Wise Magic

    Hey guys,

I was listening to these tracks in particular the last couple of days and I came to the conlcusion that they feature Ed in his absolute prime! What do you think? The talkbox guitar solo in CGTSNM is just incredible, something Eddie didn't do before. The guitar work on Humans Being and MWM is great aswell. I wish we would have seen a whole album of this material, even tho I prefer Hagar, it could have been with DLR aswell, i wouldn't care really as Ed is just brilliant on this tracks.

I'd love to hear your opinions as this is the reason I signed up on this board, to share opinions with fellow fanatics

btw, does the tab book "anthology" has the tabs for these 3 tunes?

CGTSNM is one of my favorite VH tracks! Not super huge on Me Wise Magic, like it... don't love... Humans Being is a classic too... I have the book at home, the main reason I bought it was those tracks!

I'm the opposite. MWM is an amazing tune and CGTSNM is a throwaway to me.

Absolutly right.these 3 tunes are outstanding.the overall sound quality of the guitar tone and percussion mix is impecible.humans being is the only non dave tune that i really like and crank up full blast.its impossible not to love that one.they should do these 3 live now.simply to good to ignore.

I'm in Brett's camp. I actually put MWM near the top of my list of all time VH songs. I remember how excited I was hearing that the first time. CGTSNM is usually skipped through when it comes up on my VH shuffle. I do love Humans Being though.

(Side note: I do enjoy CGTSNM better than the 3 new Hagar tracks off of Best of Both Worlds.)

Yep fully agree, Humans Being is a stand out in EVH's tone and playing and its a shame there was such a gap straight after it.

Just a small tidbit, and most people probably already know this. I believe his tech Matt worked the talkbox tube in that solo because Ed said it only sounded like a wah when he did it. Something along those lines anyway...

Humans Being is probably my fave Sammy song, great riff, tone, and it sounds good loud.

I like MWM and CGTSNM equally, both great songs.

Humans Being is a good song but a disappointing guitar solo (IMHO). I thought Ed was pretty lazy in this solo effort.

    My 2 cents.

I actually liked the solo because it was anti-solo kind of like the one in DTMWLCD.

MWM is just a great tune, not anything about it I don't like.

CGSTNM, can't even think of the last time I listened to it, never liked it.

Humans Being is a great tune, I only don't like the "Shine On" chorus. If you are pumping your fists and banging your head to this tune, there is something wrong with you.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

DTMWLCD has 2 awesome solos on it. Not sure what you are referring to there.

Wow! Quite a response, seems I'm not the only one who digs these tunes.

@donkost: do you mean that Ed actually didn't even play that part?

No, I believe he was saying that Ed played the part but Matt Bruck worked the actual Heil Talk Box during the recording.

Before regular access to the interwebs I was often surprised by new VH on the radio. I heard "Humans Being" for the first time in the spring of '96, identified it as sounding an awful lot like VH, then confirmed that when the chorus kicked in. I recall my first reaction being that it sounded a little more like Dave-era VH. I also remember thinking (and I still do) that Sammy's contribution was a minimal effort. The verse works astoundingly well, but he could have done more lyrically with the chorus. Still, the song is hard energy, and it's a real pick-you-up jam.

I listened to "Me Wise Magic" and "Can't Get This Stuff No More" a LOT when Best Of came out. I think the band sounded better sonically on those two songs than at any other time in the 90s. ("Humans Being" and Balance were close, but both lose points with me a little because of some inconsistencies in the mixes.) I think Dave sounded terrible on both songs, though. I thought that then, I still feel that way now. It was like Van Halen had evolved musically and Dave couldn't keep up. His schtick was already tired and old, and then his limitations as a singer were showing through as well. I share the sentiment that MWM is a piece of VH wizardry and a fun song. CGTSNM is just as phenomenal to me, albeit not quite the same high energy explosion as HB and MWM.

I was expecting VH III to sound--at least sonically--like the Best Of songs. What a crazy departure from that it ended up being. I can listen through all the flaws and kind of understand what Ed was going for. He wanted minimal digital reverb and more natural room sounds. He wanted more thoughtful arrangements. He wanted to dig deeper lyrically. He had some great guitar moments on that album. Some of the songs are pretty good, actually. ("Dirty Water Dog." "Once.") But SO much was just chaotic and unorganized. And when you have Alex Van Halen as your drummer and Michael Anthony as one of your background singers, you USE THAT SHIT! Ed playing drums? No MA b-vox? Crazy. Imagine if that album had Glen Ballard producing and Erwin Musper recording and mixing--just like the Best Of songs. They may have actually pulled off VH III. (Maybe.)
