Default Question about "5150" from Live Without a Net

Is Eddie using his main 5150 guitar on that track? It looks like he is, but I know that tune is in Db tuning and there was no D-Tuna back in the day, so I'm wondering how the hell he had time to change the tuning since doing so on a Floyd is such a pain in the balls.

    Thanks!

Wasn't the drum solo just before 5150? Or maybe it was the bass solo I'm not sure, but the tech's probably just unclamped the E/A nut and did it, it would only take about 2 minutes.

I have asked Adam Reiver from floydupgrades.com exactly the same! he said Ed used a couple of 5150's for that tour.

Most likely a backup Kramer. Also, don't forget the video/DVD is edited so you wouldn't see any instrument changes etc.

I've wondered about that myself, too, in the past. Same with them opening with Unchained back in the day and then going into non drop D tuned songs. As mentioned, it doesn't take too long to tune one string back up a whole step.

Floyd's are a pain in the ass to tune, but not when they are non floating like Ed's.

Also, one of Ed's contributions to the Floyd Rose was having the fine tuners having a range of a whole step, so maybe that is how he did it, too.

He's definitely using the 5150 guitar for the "5150" song on LWAN. I just looked around to find the set list from that tour, and in general, below was the gist. "5150" was sandwiched between "Dreams" (which EVH played keyboard mostly through) and the bass solo. So most likely, the 5150 Kramer got a quick de-tune to Drop-D while "Dreams" finished, and could be tuned back up to E during the bass solo and in time for the rest of the set.

thats right. Sammy played guitar on dreams and love walks in on that tour, so the 5150 guitar was tuned down and then back up. if i remember, that whole song was played in D, not E flat

Thats a good thesis. I was kinda confused by that fact that he had several 5150's coz all these little marks, the dirty fretboard etc. are thing you can't reproduce exactly/would no need for it anyway. So yeah he probably detuned his 5150.

If you listen to old bootleg audio....I think particularly from the '84 tour when they would open with Unchained, you can hear Ed use the fine tuners to tune up to Eb from Db, at the end of Unchained.

That is the original 5150- 100%, no doubt about it. Ed had many Kramer back-ups, but only one "5150".

And as far as dropping the low E down to D: You do not need to unclamp a fine tuner Floyd!
The 5150 was equipped with a fine tuner Floyd, right? All you have to do is this:
-tune the low E to "E" while the that fine tuning screw is nearly completely tightened

Now to to drop to "D":
-hit the 7th fret harmonic on the "E" string and the 12th fret
-loosen the sixth string screw until both harmonics match up and your "E" string is now "D" string!

That's it! That's the way I did it back in the '80's! LOL!

Yeah Eddie would just use a fine tuner - u hear it on the 84 tour after unchained.

Also LWAN is nothing but edits.
Eddie had many backup guitars but all u see in LWAN is the 5150 and headless.

You won't really get the tone out of a 5150 II. Ed was using lots of Marshalls on that tour and the pickup is still unknown. Some say rewound JB, stock JB, Custom Custom etc
    No one really knows.

You really need a Plexi type Marshall, the arenas gave Eddie his reverb, I don't hear any delay on his sound on LWAN unless you see him kick it in and those delays are real long ones. It does need a tiny bit of detune, maybe 2-3 cents, nothing like you hear on FUCK or Balance.

If you're talking about the actual song album tone for 5150, it sounds like a single coil to me, through his main Marshall with some detune.
