    Default My Franky/Wolfgang project

Hi all - had mentioned this in another thread, but figured I'd post it here. Long story short, I remember seeing Eddie's striped-up EVH on the cover of Guitar World a few years ago and had always loved that idea - relic'ed like the Frankenstrat, but clear-coated like any other Wolfie. I had never made a Franky of my own like so many on here have, and figured, what the heck. Obviously, I wasn't going to be able to have the DTH bridge, so I went with a Floyd.

So I bought a used/scratched up Peavey black standard on Ebay, and immediately went about stripping it and carving the notch out of the headstock! I put on an EVH bridge on, added two EVH humbuckers, and yes, couldn't help myself and bought an EVH case on ebay as well. Nearly a year later, this baby rocks. An incredible learning experience of trial-and-error... and a ton of taping, painting, wet-sanding and polishing!

As nerdy or sacrilegious as it sounds, I based the design (including all wear marks, etc) on the EVH striped Wolfy, which seemed to have some differences from the actual Frankenstrat.

All critiques are welcome. Thanks for looking!

    Nicely done!

I've seen a few Peavey headstocks get hacked to emulate the new EVH headstock and they usually look terrible, but your's looks great! Great job preserving the body binding too.

Hope you don't mind asking, how much did it cost you in the end?

Soooo hot..... that guitar is awesome! I'm tempted to do that with my ~'98 Wolf Special (the paint on the body is really chipped and scratched up).

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It was definitely a labor of love, but it was worth it... looks amazing and sounds even better!

Jedi - here's a shot of the headstock right after I was done. I sawed a wedge out of the Peavey's 'scoop' to take the bulk of the wood out, and then used a routing bit on the Dremel to smooth things out. Had to be a bit careful, but it was actually pretty painless.

Fizzy - for costs, just over a grand:
    - Beat up Peavey Wolf Standard on ebay: $700
    - EVH Humbuckers: $200
    - EVH bridge: $100(? can't remember, specifically)
    - MXR/Speed Knobs: $10
    - Replacement EVH Decal: $20
    - (plus tape, paint, sandpaper and polish)

    Wow, that is really impressive.

    I want one!

Is there a specific reason why Ed has never officially sold a striped Wolfgang? Or, even more intriguing is why he never has played one on stage? I'm even surprised that the only time he pulled out the Frankie or the replica on this tour was at the rehearsal show in L.A. back in February. Maybe Ed is simply over the stripes? Or, that stealth with the kill switch he's been playing 95% of the time is one smoking guitar!

I don't know why he doesn't play it. I know he had it on Two and a Half Men. It was also in the GW article with Tony Iommi. It looked like he had replaced the D2H bridge from the cover above with a new one and it had some serious scratches on it. Wonder if he tinkered with it too much and ruined it.

As fast98dodge mentioned, I too usually hate any striped up wolfs, but I think the combination of the Franky pattern/relic'ed look AND the style of keeping the binding/finish really made this one 'sing' to me.
