    Default My ideal guitar sound

    Hi, all.

This is a VH site, of course, so a lot of us probably love the Van Halen guitar sound, think it godly, and whatnot. I do, too, but I have to admit, the link I'm posting here is one of my favorite Ed guitar tones and lo and behold, it's NOT from the classic years.

This is a clip of Van Hagar playing 5150 in Germany and it's the guitar tone that's closest to my own and one of my favorites of Ed's. A lot of people would argue that it's too wet, but for me, it's ideal. I love how sweet it sounds and yet brutal at the same time.

Why is this considered too wet by VH fans? Obviously, it's wetter than his old tone, but still an awesome sound. I love this sound and it's the one I strive for. What say you?

Just for comparison, what would you want for your guitar sound?

5150 was my fav EVH ( van hagar era ) sound by far.
Really loved his live sound / tone on the 5150 tour as well.

Either way, you can't go wrong

I love this tone -- his Peavey 5150 Wet/Dry/Wet rig was my favorite of all his setups over the years. Especially the Balance album and tour. That's basically the same tone as you posted (pretty much an identical rig), but he had tweaked the settings a little.

absolutely agree. Great vid too. I have that whole show on dvd. People think I am nuts but still to this day Eds sound (to my ears) has never been better than 93 (RHRN) to 95 (Balance). His sound was very wet, harmonized and processed for sure but it was HUUUUUUUGE, majestic sounding and nothing can top that sound. Wish he would go back that route..... hearing the new tunes to that era of sound would be amazing. 98 was when he went back to dry sound and back to basics so to speak but I wish he would dampen it back up again.
I mean comon..... really, vanhagar or not, how the hell can you say this sound did not rock???!!!

Well apparently I've found the 10 or so people that don't complain about this sound lol. When I see this kind of stuff on youtube all the hard cores are saying it's "too wet."

Fuck that, as far as I'm concerned. I love this sound. It's sweet and full of muscle at the same time. It sings and roars. It's like a massive organ or something, don't you guys think?

Well I never found that Steve Stevens and Joe Satriani sound similar and I certainly don't think they do in that example :P

take me back to 1995..... short hair, EBMM, Peavey 5150 and put Roth at the helm and play classic VH..... damn I would love to see Ed's rig with Roth singing. I loved the hagar era but would love to see Ed with his wet sound, EBMM back then.....

That would be interesting. Probably the closest you'll get is hearing them sing Panama or Jump from the Balance tour in Toronto.

    or Jump

I love that wet sound. It's so versatile.
