Default Ultimate Classic Rock's top 10 Hagar Era tracks

    Not seen this posted:

Not a single surprise for anyone in there I think, pretty much what you'd see any other mag draw up as a list. Utterly missed some brilliant tracks from the era in favour of the commercial line-up, which is a shame because I think it detracts from the truth of the wider scope of material he did with them.

Ugh this list is a reminder as to why i'm not a fan of the Hagar era. Haivng said that they made some cool tunes during his tenure with the band; that I must confess always wonder how they would sound and turned out if Dave was the front man. My top 10 Van Hagar tunes:

    Finish What You Started
    Runaround
    Black and Blue
    Why Can't This Be Love
    Top of the World
    Summer Nights
Humans Being.... I guess that's it for me. These few tunes are great but I can live without the rest.

I guess if you are talking about songs that were released as singles to radio or whatever then that list is pretty good (Cabo Wabo was put out there as a radio single I think).

overall they missed a ton of good songs-Summer Nights, 5150, Good Enough, Mine All Mine (my all time favorite VH song), AFU, Black and Blue, Judgement Day, Pleasure dome, The Dream is Over, Won't get Fooled Again from RHRN (I don't care if they cut it in the studio ro performed it live, I love it on this disk), VH's One Way to Rock from RHRN, The Seventh Seal, Amsterdam, CSLY, Attershock...really everything from Balance that isn't an instrumental except for Feelin', Humans Being and hell I'd throw LTS in there for being the only new song on BOBW that sounded inspired, yoiu could also really say any song off of LWAN...I know it's a video but that and the Japan 89 show totally smoke.

I have to agree number 1 has to be 5150 LWAN - Eddies intermission is just phenomenal, but its how the whole band plays together is what it makes it so great.

apart from that its defo Judgement Day, AFU, Source of Infection, Mine All Mine, Not Enough

I might get ragged on for this but I think Not Enough is just a steller, epic performance by everyone in the band. I love the intro with just the piano and Sam's voice and then the backing vocals sound so great. LOVE the solo and I LOVED the video-might be my favorite video they've ever done, it was just such a cool little clip, like watching a mini movie...the band on the rooftop. I think if this song would have been marketed right (see Aerosmiths Don't want to close my eyes) it would have been huge.

    Totally agree!

I forgot to mention The Dream is Over, Aftershock

As much fun it is to listen to the DLR era, the Van Hagar era was musically just so much better

I have no problem with the list, as this site is obviously choosing the best/most commercial songs. I may rearrange the order a bit. I would add Summer Nights, Mine All Mine, Seventh Seal, Don't Tell Me, and Feelin.

Amen, brother. Musically, Van Hagar is more mature. Eddie spread his wings and showed us his musical genius on songs like Dreams, Love Walks In, When It's Love, FWYS, Poundcake, Mine All Mine, and the most killer tone on the entire Balance album.

When they did top 10 Roth songs, was Jump #1? It seems it's just a list of Hagar-era Top 20 radio hits.

    My top 10

    1. Humans Being
    2. Feelin'
    3. Dreams
    4. Poundcake
    5. Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do
    6. AFU
    7. Summer Nights
    8. Judgment Day
    9. The Seventh Seal
    10. Cabo Wabo

I could probably just say Balance too.

Hagar era VH has the same problem with perception that Journey has to a large degree. Their pop/radio hits were so well known that it's all people think of which is just unfortunate. I'm not the biggest Journey fan around but I do like them quite a bit. Most hard rock fans just think of them as doing stuff like Open Arms and Faithfully and Send Her My Love but Journey did a bunch of heavier riffy stuff, too. Most rock fans would probably be shocked to find out something like Dead or Alive was on the same album as Open Arms for example.

I love DLR Van Halen and Hagar Van Halen and they have different qualities and character but the Hagar albums had a lot of rockers, too. And those albums were certainly better written and the band performed much better live consistently during that era. Obviously the Dave era is so energetic and has so much attitude that it's got its own charm though and I get why some people prefer it. But people who look at the Hagar albums as being "soccer-mom" music are just being completely shallow,
