    Default Has Van Halen Evolved?

We were talking last night and the topic came to Van Halen. I mentioned the new album how much I liked it, the tour is going well, and one of my friends said that Van Halen doesn't seem to have gone any where over all of these years. I thought he had a good point. They started out so fantastically, they were so popular, Dave left and Sammy came in. I think they hit a high point with "Right Now" which is still an awesome pop rock song. Fast forward to today, back with Dave, no longer the energetic party band they used to be- and it begs the question have they gone any where? Ed is still awesome with his tone and feel. I dont ever have to hear Jump again in my life. I hope the next album they forget the past, and just go for it. Bring outside people in, more singers, and get back to what Van Halen used to be- very modern and doing things no one else can do!

Van Halen's evolving can be found on tracks like You And Your Blues and Honeybabysweetiedoll.

I think the songs are still very energetic. Physically, C'mon man they're almost 60. Even so, I think they get around pretty well still. As far as outside writers go, I hope that NEVER happens. ADKOT is a great album and I don't think Eddie and Dave have run out of ideas. Also, I have a strong suspicion that Wolf will be more involved in the songwriting next album. That may give it a different spin.

They're approach on this new album was dead on.

Half of it reached back to the beginning to recapture that part of the band people wanted. The other half are songs that "take the music past where they found it" as the great blues saying goes.

I think Dave has pushed it further lyrically as well. Is there anyone who saw the title "Outta Space" and immediately thought it was about the "Star Wars" kinda space and not what it is which is a really cool look on our planet running out of "space"? That pretty much sums up Dave's lyrical stretch in my opinion.

For me, "Outta Space" was about filling that last slot in my CD bookshelves with the last CD I'll ever buy for that very reason.

I think they have matured. No one really knows the truth for sure. How many times have we seen bands high 5 on stage, smile all the time, give interviews where they talk about being so close only to have it turn out they were lying?

Based on what I've seen, with the exception of how Ed handled getting rid of Mike, it seems to me that Ed is trying to set a better example for Wolf and show him how to be professional and bury the hatchet with a guy like Dave. And even with Sammy.

Like I said before, Van Halen had a lot of political/fan capital that they've essentially blown when it came to the massive pop following they had back in 1984 and 5150. Since then only the diehards have stayed true.

When Van Halen was HUGE you had to know that those numbers were soft and would correct themselves eventually . . . you're always going to have pseudo-fans who jump on the bandwagon at the height of the party only to never return. I'm not disheartened by them not getting the same return they once did. I only care if the music is being produced and there's a show ticket I can buy.

    Uh.. seriously?

I dont want them to evolve. Thats usually when bands start to suck. I kinda hope they just stay where they're at.

If evolving means songs that are not as good as Light Up the Sky, then I don't want any evolution.

    I think they have.

For me, I was so glad that Eddie got cleaned up and really came back rockin' hard. I hated to think that the 3 songs on BOBW and the porn soundtrack was going to be his swan song.

This new album shows that these guys still have it musically.
    Someone said it great earlier,
"Half of it reached back to the beginning to recapture that part of the band people wanted. The other half are songs that "take the music past where they found it" as the great blues saying goes."

That's something I find kind of funny.

I was reading spa bio on AC/DC back in 2009, and Malcolm Young talked about this a bit. He pointed to the Beatles and how they went off and did the Sgt Peppers thing and eventually worked their way back to where they started with Let It Be, and said why deviate for the sake of deviating from what you started off with if you are just going to try to recapture it later on. Stick to what you are good at and enjoy doing.

That being said, I think VH has evolved. Just look at the lyrics on ADKOT and how they are compared to the 6 pack, as well as the music on songs like HBSD, and YAYB.

They "evolved" on VH3 and 99 percent of people shit on Ed for it. To most people, they haven't changed, but they've changed as much or more for the better than Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Kiss, Ac/Dc, etc etc. Anyone of us here could make a multi volume mix cd of eclectic VH moments throughout their career.

"ADKOT," in my opinion, takes the band's initial creative spark and uses it as a spring-board from which to evolve. (Personally, I think it's genius as a strategy).

"As Is" and "Stay Frosty" take the Van Halen signature sound, and put it on steroids. The other four tunes: "China Town;" "You and Your Blues;" "Honeybabysweetiedoll," and "The Trouble With Never" are exceptionally eclectic.

When I asked my older brother what he thought of "ADKoT," he said something like, "in 1984, if you asked me what Van Halen would sound like in 30 years -- this is what I'd hope they'd sound like."

When I asked him what he meant by that, he said, "Dave's lyrics are better. Eddie is more experimental. The rhythm section is more complex."

I think that about sums it up -- and one can especially hear it on VH's new tunes.
