Default The Official EVH Charvel Star Appreciation Thread

Time for the pictorial history of one of Ed's more mysterious (they all are actually) guitars- the Charvel Star! This is an especially difficult guitar to document, as there is not even a single clear shot of the back!

So here we go, feel free to post any pictures to help this thread along...

    1979

The story goes that it was made by Wayne Charvel as a copy of Ed's hacked Ibanez Destroyer, the legendary Shark!

The earliest picture of the Star shows that it was originally a plain white guitar. It's on the far right...

At this point it has a standard Fender tremolo,

The humbucker looks to be a white Schaller humbucker,

Interestingly, the neck appears to be a vintage Danalectro DC-59 neck,

This necks first appearence is in 1977 with another Explorer copy body...

Then onto a mysterious Strat body for the VHII recording sessions (note the pickguard will end up on the freshly red painted Frankenstrat and holds the Mighty Mite red phenolic bobbin single coil that is there in the neck position of Franky to this day)

Finally the neck ends up on the newly taped, then sprayed black Star body and is fitted with a locking nut. Thus we have the classic Star. It's career is made on the 1980 Invasion tour...

    ...continued in part 2...

    1980

The Star is used on the 1980 Invasion tour.

The front of the guitar is unique in it's stylized striping,

The back has an interesting mystery. The words 'UBA TWO' are visible. Possibly, this actually is 'UBAB TWO', as Dweezil Zappa recalls that Ed referred to the Rasta guitar as 'UBAB'.

After the 1980 tour, the Star's glory days are up. It's soon dissembled before the 1981 Fair Warning tour...

    1981

    The Star has been disassembled...

The Danaelectro neck ended up having the headstock modified, and then the neck was attached to the 'Rude' guitar for the Fair Warning tour.

This neck then ends up on Frankenstrat for the Brian May Starfleet sessions,

And stays there until just before the U.S. Festival,

And that ends the story of the Charvel Star...

Whatever happened to the body? Are we saying that in the ensuing 31 years there hasn't been ONE photo of the body of the star?

The Star is one of my favorite EVH guitars and sadly I haven't seen any recent pics.

Cool stuff, I had never even given that guitar notice before.

I didn't know anything about Van Halen until Diver Down, I guess it had been pretty much de-commissioned by then.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I've often wondered how the Danelectro neck worked out, as I've always thought they were a 25" scale length, unlike a Fender with a 25½" scale length.

Yeah....I know, though he was no stranger to moving bridges around. He loved Dano necks though because they were so damn stable. They never needed adjusting. I remember an article years ago where he said he actually had a few necks he'd yanked off Dano's and had put them on some various guitars. He did move away from them though. Construction wise however, they do share a rather updated lineage with the EVH Wolfie's. Vintage Dano necks had steel reinforcement bars their length, and the Wolf's have graphite plus the truss. So may have still been a design characteristic Ed really liked.

I've always been curious as to the different wood on the headstock in those pics. Guess I'd never even thought that Ed would add mass and then reshape the Dano neck into something else.

...this might have been common knowledge to a lot of you, but I'd certainly never made the connection...

Was this ever figured out? Was the Dano neck truly 25" scale?

Nothing to figure out... the neck is indeed a 25" scale. I know because I have one.

Something else to add to the history of the Charvel Star... it apparently had a strat-headstock neck on it initially. I've never seen any pictures, but a video from 1979 Fresno surfaced in recent years, and you can see that the star is painted white and has a strat neck with a rosewood fingerboard. This has to have been after he first got it:

They've already shipped some. I have seen a couple on Facebook and a few on Ebay that are in-hand ready to ship. One seller even "upgraded" one and is selling it.

I've found that the smaller dealers seem to get the new EVH guitars way before the larger chains.
