As far as I know he only used the Flying V on HFT and then later on Top of the World.

I seem to remember reading that he used it for GGB and maybe DDL too. He obviously used the Ripley for Top Jimmy as well.

yeah I almost remember that now too Dutchie.... so strange cause you read different things that contradict each other over the years that Ed said. Now that I think of it I also remember reading he used it on "5150" the song too somewhere. Strange...... like when he said back in 96 he used the PV Wolf with the Steinberger Trans Trem on "Me Wise Magic" but then a couple years ago when the guitar afficionado mag came out he said he used the Les Paul Striped 5150 guitar for "Me Wise Magic..." lol you can never tell with Ed. He cant possibly remember what he used on all those songs.

Was the Frankenstein still your main guitar in the studio on that album?

I had actually retired the Frankenstein by then. I’m pretty sure I used the Kramer 5150 guitar the most on that album—“Panama,” “Girl Gone Bad,” “House of Pain,” the solos on “Jump” and “I’ll Wait.”

You used a ’58 Gibson Flying V on several songs as well, particularly “Hot for Teacher” and “Drop Dead Legs.”

You are very right. The ride out lick that I play on the last minute and a half of “Drop Dead Legs” came afterward. We had already finished recording the song, and then I came up with that part, which I thought would sound great at the end of the song. I’m not sure how Donn put it together, but we recorded it separately and added it to end of the song, even though it sounds like it was recorded at the same time. That ride out solo was very much inspired by Allan Holdsworth. I was playing whatever I wanted like jazz—a bunch of wrong notes here and there—but it seemed to work.
The most important hour is always the present. The most significant person is precisely the one sitting across from you right now. The most necessary work is always love.

    Pardon my ignorance.
Is that yellow one on the left the Kramer double neck?

And, it looks like the 5150's headstock was still white.

Yup, the yellow guitar is the Kramer double neck used during the US festival.

But the 5150 headstock is painted. You can see the logo and the black stripe. There's just a glare on it so it's hard to see the red.

I'm curious about that too, doesn't sound like a JB to me, but then again it probably wasn't an off-the-line production model either I'm guessing

According to lore, it was a JB rewound by MJ or someone else at Duncan. SO I guess it could be anything. I've heard it described as an even hotter JB, so who knows.

He changed pickups in that guitar a few times. Seymour is rumoured to have wound them himself.

The 5150 is one guitar I need in the collection...I'm thinking 2018 is the year for it!
