Long story short, he was at the counter with strings and pedals. No one offered to help him quick enough. He got a bit upset. No one recognized him. Guess he felt he had to ask if they knew who he was. So I could see him going somewhere he liked. Friedman amps jumps out at me. Bringing any guitar us a possibility.

Remember, he was looking rough then and had duct tape holding his boots together. I feel bad even telling this story. I cleaned it up a bit. It's great to see him today rockin' out!
neat post.... your right too he was strange around that porn soundtrack period. Never liked that version of Ed. I can remember the time when Ed was HAPPY as a clam no one recognized him and would have been thrilled to be in a store and have no one bugging him. During the 90s (Balance era) I have video interviews of him saying when he cut his hair it was great to be out shopping and have on one bugging him. Of course he was in great spirits at that time and was real happy go lucky like he is again these days. Glad Edward is back to normal and rocking out. Great post AFU.
as far as the grail 5150 pics, those are some neat pics for sure. I remember when I first saw them I was amazed at how prevalant the grain in the body was (of course this began the huge debate over what the body was poplar or basswood) and being happy that it has some showing grain because mine did too and I never got a good enough veiw of the body to determine grain in it.
The 5150 Kramer is still my all time absolute favorite VH guitar and the one that got me into VH back in the 80s and began my VH replica building years later. Seeing it back in 04 up close while in the golden ring on Eds side was surreal for sure. I have some AWESOME pics I took that night from 4 feet away from Edward. The one in this post back a couple pages is one of the best too.... wish it still had the Kramer neck on it.

I've got a bit of inside info from that time period. Most of it is not very complimentary. I rarely share the stories. Plus no one here will believe me. I refuse to throw my source under bus. But it's relatively common knowledge Ed had long gray hair. Missing teeth. And a rope belt. But in his defense, I've stood at the counter at my local GC for 20 min and was ignored. I left without making a purchase.

Back to the topic. I always thought the newer 5150 pics were from a rehearsal space. Assumed it was a VH rehearsal. Or backstage from the 2004 tour. Maybe the photographer will tell us?

I'd believe you AFU. I also have some interesting first hand info from around that time period. Ed was in a bad place at that time and he certainly threw some people for a loop. I often ponder what the 04 tour with Sam would have been like if Ed was in a good place at that time. I bet we would have seen the 5150 / OU812 era all over again. Either way I am glad he is looking good and healthy and happy today. As far as the 5150 guitar is concerned, I'd love to see a re-appearance again someday. Who knows, maybe it'll turn up again someday.

I would imagine it would be a new photo of the 5150. No point sending a photographer there only to use old photo's of a guitar hanging in the same building...

looks to have the same hardware (PUP, input jack and eylets) on it as the 04 tour so it has to be Ed put the original Kramer neck back on. Glad to see it too.

    Love this thread.

Along with the Franky, the Kramer 5150 is the guitar I associate with Eddie the most. Nothing against the EBMMs, Peaveys & EVHs, they are all nice guitars but the Kramer is one I saw him play "5150" on LWAN years ago and the solo made my jaw drop. He pulled sounds out of that guitar I had never heard before and that was it - I was a Van Halen fan from then on.

I remember finding a picture of it in a guitar mag and just staring at it for hours.

    What a guitar.

I wish Ed would have broke it out for at least one song this past tour...hopefully there's a new album in the works with a tour to follow and he can bust it out for a song or two.

Agreed. Love the ebmms and Frank but the 5150 did it for me. That is the guitar that made me want to play. I betcha we have not seen the end of that one either. She'll make an appearance again someday.

Agreed with a lot of this ! Frankie is the guitar that got me into VH , after seeing the video for Jump . The 5150 though is probably THE most iconic guitar in rock history , IMO . Regardless of Eddie's brilliant axes with EBMM , Peavey , and EVH Fender - his 5150 Kramer is the most associated with him and his school of guitar playing .

I agree too. It is just an amazing guitar. Everything was just right somehow.
From it's amazing tone, iconic look...I mean it even looked like it was a joy to play. For such a simple guitar, the variation of tones he was able to grind out of it just from technique was always so impressive to me, and it was the guitar that made me think differently as far as how truly important, even on a very basic guitar how each component selected affects the next, and ultimately the end result to create a very expressive instrument...Much like the relationship Ed had with Kramer I'm sure.
Two things I'd love to know though...Just what was that SD pickup exactly (It never sounded exactly like a 59', or a JB, especially when he'd roll off the volume...It still had a fullness that neither of those pickups have a lot of rolled off without an electronics mod...Especially the JB which goes flat), and secondly...Why in God's name would he take that pickup out of it???
I know in the GA article, he say it still sounds amazing, but I'm sure it's nowhere near as tasty as with that amazing original.
I hope we see it again someday......And BTW...if Ed's reading this:Ship the original neck to me so I can fix that awesome headstock right for ya! I could use the work!

Has anyone noticed the difference in upper left body horn on the various pictures of the 5150? I'm digitally mapping the best pictures I have into CAD for a project and cannot figure out why there appears to be two 5150 body shapes.

I'd swear in Providence, 5150 tour he broke a string and switched guitars to another Kramer 5150. But then I say maybe I'm wrong because he broke a string on Summer Nights and he waited to get the Steinberger back and started the song again from the beginning. That I remember for sure.

There probably are 5150 replicas. He gave one to Dweezil. Assumed to be the one. Then he's playing it in 2004. He still has a stack of painted striped Kramer bodies ready to go. I think both 5150 and 1984 Kramer. But that's just a guess. The bodies exist though. LWAN when he plays the song 5150 I still say there's something off about the 5150 Kramer he's playing. The neck looks different to me. I assumed it was me. But maybe it's a different guitar. It is a drop D song. I know he uses the Kramer 5150 during the 1984 tour and plays Unchained then tunes the D string up to E with the fine tuners. There's at least two Charvel b/y striped guitars he owned in the early 80's. Stripes are a bit different. He did have a Charvel similar to the original bumble bee no one knew about. Point is anything is possible with Ed. I believe he has Kramer 5150 copies.
