I was able to shake Ed's hand that night during jump. I have many other pics of Ed from that very night. Some not so flattering. Good to see my pic being put to good use.

You can see the added tuner on the 5150 in early 1990.

Add me to the list of those whom associated EVH solely with this guitar for many years, due to LWAN. My first Kramer was a red Striker 100ST with a banana headstock, and though it got stolen, I did replace it with a Focus 1000 that I modded & painted to resemble the 5150. It's still one of my main guitars.

I always wondered what the break in the headstock was actually caused by. Some folks said it happened while in the posession of EBMM, but I remember in the GW collectors issue (the one about Ed's guitars), he mentioned that he almost lost a bunch of guitars off a rack a few years prior during an earthquake because Zeke installed it without actually hitting a stud!
At any rate, the gutar was not featured in the magazine which I was hoping it would. I remember being thrilled seeing the V, the Frankie, and some of the other rarities, but the 5150 was always one of my favorites. I know to Ed, it probably was just another guitar nearing the end of it's run, but if it was one of the casualties of the poorly mounted rack, it's a shame.
Such a peice of Rock & Roll history. And no offence to EBMM, but what a hackjob on the repair. I've had banana/hockey stick headstocks come to my shop over the years for repair. They are pretty prone to breaks just by their design. Usually they would break pretty clean either at the B or G string tuner hole, or at the screw hole itself. I got pretty good at repairing em'. I did a former member of the links Kramer Pacer neck around 20 to 25 yrs. ago, and it's still holding strong. It's in my possesion now on a Destroyer/Shark style build, I play it regularily. They were such good necks on the early Kramers.
I still swear that the extra meat on those headstocks add something to the sustain and overall tone of the guitar.

Rob - you just jogged my memory. when i was lucky enough to visit 5150 in 1996, I got a tour of the whole studio, including the room above the studio. Next to the stairway leading up stairs, were STACKS of 5150 bodies, one on top of the other. It's been along time, but I'm guessing there were 20 - 30 bodies in 2 or 3 stacks. All painted up and ready to go. I'll bet they are still there

Glad to see the 5150 get an appreciation thread. Tired of those other guitars getting all the love!

My first introduction to VH was via the RHRN album, and I bought LWAN vhs later that summer and wore through it. So, like many who posted before me here, the 5150 is the quintessential VH guitar. I remember being amazed back when, when I found out it was used on the 1984 tour. It was my first and only replica I've made.

The 5150 headstock was not broken by Ernie ball. Ed broke the headstock by throwing it at Alex during one of their fights. Ernie ball repaired it.

I know! I'd been a fan for years prior to the 5150 guitar, but there was something real special about it. Not taking away from the Franky...To me, it was the perfect evolution for Eddie's guitar. Straight ahead, hot rod design. Had the perfect sound in my opinion. It looked wicked. I remember being a little disappointed at first when I heard Eddie was going to EBMM, given they were a guitar known for their high-end attributes. I know Kramer was done, but I kinda thought he might go with another manufacturer along the same sort of general design practices, like say Jackson/Charvel (which he helped foster early on with Wayne). The EBMM's a great guitar though, and once I got used to seeing and hearing them, he obviously made a great choice.
Still.....There's just something about those simple rattle-can striped up, beat to shit guitars he played that added to the magic. I had friends say "How does he make such amazing, powerful music on those beat up things?"
The 5150 will ALWAYS be my favorite Eddie guitar.
