Default The Rasta Guitar- An Official Appreciation Thread

Well, since there is an official Franky and VHII appreciation threads, I think it's well time for a thread or two devoted to Ed's lesser known, but equally interesting, guitars of yesteryear.

First up is the Rasta guitar. The story of it has been posted many times in other threads, but it never has had an official one...

Of course this being one of Eddie Van Halen's guitars we're talking about here, it's history is never so simple...

This guitar of course started out as the Unchained!

Let's begin with a visual timeline...

    -1981

The 'Unchained' guitar comes mysteriously to life in 1981 for the Fair Warning tour. It gets it's name for being used on the song 'Unchained' which requires a drop-D tuning. The body is said to be made of mahogany. It features a black and white paint scheme featuring circles, stripes, a human figure and stylized arrows. It wear a non-fine tuner Floyd Rose and oddly, the output jackplate is reversed!

The back features the phrase 'Bye See Ya Later'.

If the neck looks familiar, it's because it later ended up on Frankenstrat for the Diver Down tour. It is also the current neck that is attached to Franky today.

Soon the 'Unchained' will be painted in a most incredible paintjob...

    1982?

The guitar has been repainted in a most unusual way for the Diver Down tour. It has yellow, red, green and black paint layers now. This is one of the only guitars of Ed's which features green paint.

It still sports the 21 fret, square heeled neck which will soon end up on Frankenstrat. Yet now it has a fine tuner Floyd Rose and a Schaller humbucker. And the output jack has been placed correctly this time!

    Front

    Back

The Rasta guitar today is owned by Dweezil Zappa,

The current neck on the restored Rasta happens to be none other than the original VHII neck!

And thus concludes the history of the Rasta guitar. Hope you enjoyed it!

That was great! I feel like an entire book could be written this way on Ed's guitars and their different incarnations. Thanks!

What's the deal with the other stripped guitar in the tuning room? The blue orange & yellow stripped one?

You mean Eddies taped up Kramer? I believe Kramer had given Eddie this guitar, which may have also been in an ad? He played it out a few times (Pictures of Alan Holdsworth shows have him playing it) without the tape. This may be the guitar that was supped to have the Rockinger EVH tremolo, in which he hated.
Eddie must think I'm a BOZO to want to drop THAT much on one of his new Charvel Guitars!

Is it just me, or does Dweezil look HUGE playing this guitar, I.E. the guitar looks tiny?

Didn't Brett paint up a Rasta?
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Here's a dumb little piece of trivia.
    Why is the jackplate reversed?
A guy I knew years ago said he had info from Rudy (either direct or through someone else) that a lot of folks asked about that. The answer he had was simply because the bar on that original non finetuning Floyd had a bit of a higher angle leading up to and from the bent area, more like some Fender Strat's bars can be, and what would happen is the bar which Eddie liked loose, would slip over snag behind the cable's end jack, so he would have to fumble for the bar. So by flipping the jack around, the bar would instead just hit the cable end jack where the straight of the bar was lower and not slip over.
That disappeared with the install of the newer Floyd.
    It's a cool guitar.

yeah thats known as the Kramer multi tape guitar. Kramer pacer body with a Kramer strat style neck and Rockinger tremolo. Played it on Diver Down for a few shows. I actually have some pics somewhere of him playing the multi tape guitar here and there.

here is one I did a few years back. I just had a gold floyd on it instead of the rockinger.

here is Ed holding it, I have some pics of him actually playing it too but cant find them now

Awesome thread by the way dude. Awesome.... I am really digging my Rasta guitar too and this thread has perfect timing.

here are a few pics of Ed playing Rasta live you might want to ad to your post. Awesome idea Atomicpunk91

    Thanks Rob!

Your new Rasta guitar is one of the best out there in my opinion. I remember seeing it posted elsewhere before, and I was immediately impressed. Congrats on acquiring it!

I thought getting a comprehensive single thread in one place for each of Ed's guitars would make things a lot easier to get pictures and info on them, instead of the usual internet hunting.

Debating whether to do the Shark, 'Rude', or possibly the Charvel Star guitar next. I've never seen a comprehensive thread on those ever. I'm afraid though with some of these guitars (like the Star) it will be short posts because of the lack of pictures that have been taken of these axes. Plus Ed's later guitars from the Ernie Ball days and up would be difficult to sort out. For now I think I'll focus on the guitars from the 6-pack years.

    Cheers!

    thanks bro,

I am sorry to stick that stuff on the multi tape guitar on there. Did not mean to go off base of your thread. Its an awesome one and a great idea. Cant wait to see whats next. The Star guitar would be a good one too.

    back to the Rasta
