    Default Tube Combo recommendations

    Hey all,

Pardon if I missed a thread I could have put this in.

I was wondering what some of you gigging players out there recommend.

For gigging caliber amps I basically have 3 stacks but use a half stack for most gigs. I mostly use a 5150 head with a Marshall 1960 a cab. A half stack. Smallest I have. Works and sounds great but really it's over kill for typical bar/club gigs. doesn't have to be much louder than 3 MVol(either channel) and it's a lot to haul when you could easily get away with a sweet smaller tube combo.

So I'm thinking about trying a tube combo.

It's gotta be a tube amp. At least 2 channel...with a clean and gain channel.
I hate distortion pedals and love natural amp distortion.
I don't want anything with "effects" on it...no digital stuff...no line 6 etc..
Something dependable that can take normal knocking/beating while hauling... like the old 5150's do. They are tanks.

It's mostly for 80% covers 20% originals. Cover a variety of styles and use a variety of guitars. From funk to metal from blues to pop etc typical bar/club party type band with some hard edge to it. Gotta at least get as "clean" as a old 5150(not that clean huh? lol but clean enough) and gotta have enough gain to easily play even the most intense metal.

I am considering the 5150 III mini..it's not a true combo.. but will likely have the tones etc I'm thinking of...less stage real estate, less hauling, more than enough power for normal bar/club gigs

What do you all recommend? What do you use for similar gigs?
Anyone use a 5150 3 mini for the same purpose? How do u like it?

    Would appreciate any input.

    Thanks

The 50w 5150 would be a good way to go if you were to be travelling with a 1x12. If you're planning on lugging around the 4x12, there's no point in buying anything. Keep what you have.

You mean the old original 5150 combo behemoth? Those sound nice, heavy as hell though aren't they?

A few months ago I met some friends for a quick after work drink etc.
While we were there the band was bringing their gear in through the front. The guitarist had a cool system which planted this seed. On a hand truck/dolly type thing he had a mesa boogie combo, his pedal board, 3 guitars, and a duffle bag all bungie corded in one bundle. He rolled it all up and seemed like such an easier way to go. His combo was plenty loud enough even before they micd him. I really dug his convenient system but did not love his tone.

The dolly was something like this..

The 5150 3 micro seems like it could easily fit on a dolly like this and plenty loud enough...but unsure of it's durability or if better options are out there..ones I dont really know about.

here's a vid showing the micro head and cab size.

That could easily fit on the dolly with several guitars, my pedal board and stands.. You'd stack the gear on the dolly out of the car... bungee it up roll it in or out in one trip. For the smaller places these seems like the way to go to me anymore.

Just need to settle on a amp/combo. Some out there must use combos etc live that are tube with multiple channels and effects loop. Just looking for opinions and food for thought.

I have the 6505+ head run into a 4x12 cab and it sounds pretty damn good.
A friend of mine has the 6505+112 combo and it is a kick ass little amp. I really think the stock speaker sounds quite bright and I'm sure it would sound much better being elevated off of the floor a few feet. His amp came stock with Ruby tubes both pre and power. I put some JJ power tubes in there and gave him several different GT Gold and EH tubes for the pre amp. This seemed to warm up the tone some. As with the 6505+head---the clean channel is quite harsh.
I spent a lot of time and money rolling tubes to get the clean channel even usable. I ended up putting a 12ax7 NOS Mulder in v1 and a Blackplate Raytheon in v2 to clean it up and yet still scream on the OD channels.
On the combo, there is a substantial amount of break up on the clean channel and having a single 12" speaker seemed to make it much more profound and harsh. It seems you can play Stevie Ray and Jimi (Band of Gypsies) type stuff just off of the break up of the clean channel. I have never been able to get an acoustic sounding clean tone out of either amp. But, his amp and mine are set primarily directed towards a heavy VH tone and being only a 2 channel amp ---this greatly affects the clean channel etc !!!
Both version of the amp rock out really well--it just all comes down to the quality of the clean channel and what you want.
The 5150 III 100w---I have NO issues with inregard to any channel. It is the best amp I have ever owned.
Please keep in mind that I have only jammed the 6505+head in a club setting three times and never took the 5150III out of the house.
I think the 6505+112 combo would need to be mic-d up pretty good to get the dynamics of the sound out into the place you where playing !!!

The 50w 5150III is going to be my next amp purchase as both the 6505+head and 5150III 100w are just to damn much for what I am doing at home.
I called every music store and guitar shop in the entire Houston and surrounding area one Saturday morning and no one had one I could check out.
I am still kinda upset about that---this massive city I live in and not one damn place has it !!!

The 5150 III 50w is what you want.

Last night mine did its first gig and I got a lot of compliments on my tone. Amazing amp.

I run Mullard 12AU7's in the preamp of my 5150, there's less gain on tap but those beauties really smooth the amp out. The 'Buzzsaw' effect is gone, less hiss and the mids really get a big push. The only drawbacks are the price (55 each here in the UK) and the longevity. I spose putting one in the V1 position may have some tonal advantages too.

I have been apprehensive about the 12au7 becuase of the lower gain output.
Hearing that they take out the buzzsaw effect---I may have to breakdown and get some.
Are you running the 12ua7 only in the v1 slot or anywhere else ?

I run them in all 5 positions! If I need any extra gain (not usually necersary) then I have a Tubescreamer (TS09) or a Keely Katana boost pedal. Theres still more than enough gain for most situations.
Lately I have been prefering my Diezel VH4. Totally different amp though, it has 4 seperate preamps and is capable of everything from glassy, Fender style cleans through to 5150 saturation and beyond, seperate EQ's for each channel is a massive bonus too.

The sustain using the Mullards is equal to using 12AX7's really, even with the reduced gain it still drifts nicely into harmonic feedback. Even when using stock tubes I dont think I ever pushed the Pre beyond 5.5-6 uless I was messing around.
