Default David Lee Roth & John 5 have a new cd all ready to go...

John 5: The virtuoso talks about his latest solo album, God Told Me To, and countless side projects, including a recent collaboration with David Lee Roth.

In the new Guitar World magazine June issue ''Slipknot on the cover'' John 5 talks about a new cd that he Dave,Gregg Bissonette and Brett Tuggle recorded just before the VH machine got rolling...he says there are 12 or 13 songs in the can and hopes that its released in the near future its all ''Acoustic'' looks like Dave was preparing in case the VH gig fell through. I think there was a discussion about this a year or two ago here at the links I know I talked about it.

    Default Wow!

WOW!!! I love how Dave sounds with John 5 -- 2nd only to Eddie (even though, imo, Vai and Becker are technically better players). John 5 just sounds right with DLR -- not to mention he wrote Manson's best album, imo.

I'd love to hear this collaboration.

Thanks man, that was my first thought after reading this thread earlier and I was going to post that line but decided to hold off. Some of these goofy statements of Ed's still cause me to smile, even after they've been used a million times.

I listened a podcast audio interview with Gregg Bissonette, was probably 2010, where he clearly said he had been in the studio with DLR as well.

When I originally hear about this ... I was hoping it was a EEAS reunion.

    Hmmm... an acoustic project?!?

Brett Tuggle seems to be Roth's 'other' favorite collaborator, but not really one of my favorite matches for Roth.

Strange ... the timing of those sessions... just after the 1st reunion tour and before the ADKOT sessions. hmmmm... ?

I hope this can score a release in the not too distant future, I'm keen to hear it...
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

John 5's new disc has a tune on it called "Ya Dig?" -- named for a DLR expression, and featuring Billy Sheehan on bass, (no word on G. Bissonette).

John 5 Talks About Working With Dave in Guitar World
Just got the June 2012 issue of Guitar World and there's an interview with John 5. In it he says some pretty cool stuff about his work with Dave on DLR Band album. Wish I knew how to scan it. Instead I'll just type in the relevant questions and answers.

GW: You've talked often of Van Halen's influence on you as a musician. Given your love for the band's music, what was it like to have the opportunity to play with David Lee Roth on his 1998 album, DLR Band?

J5: It was amazing. I was actually playing with Rob Halford at the time, but I sought Dave out and sent some songs to him through his management. He liked what I did, and his manager at the time invited me up to his house. And for me, meeting Dave - I may as well have been meeting Superman or Spider-Man or something. He's a childhood hero. I remember driving through the front gate of this massive house in Pasadena, and the first thing I see is the car from the "Panama" video - the red convertible. That blew my mind.
And then Dave came out of the house, and he was just as you would expect. [impersonating Roth] "John! Good to see ya! Great songs! Here's what I wanna do. I wanna go into the studio and I wanna cut this record just like the old Van Halen days - just knock it out." And I said, "That's great, Mr. Roth. Only I'm rehearsing for a tour with Rob Halford." And he said, "No problem. But I wanna have you fresh every day, so what we're gonna do is we're gonna start recording at six am. Then afterward you can go do your other thing." [laughs]
So I would get up at five in the morning and go down to Ocean Studios in Burbank to record with Dave, and from there I'd go rehearse with Halford. And I'll never forget being at Ocean that first day: here I am with one of my idols, and right before we start, Dave gets on the mic and he goes, "If you can't do it in two takes, you can't do it. Hit it, boys!" I was like, Oh my god....But we did it. We cut the whole record in two weeks, including mising.

GW: Do you still keep in touch with Dave?

J5: Ever since then we've been really good friends. And here's something I don't think really anyone knows: Dave and I have about 12 or 13 songs in the can for a future record. And it's all acoustic. But not strummy, campfire stuff - I'm talking lots of cool, crazy jazz chords, and 50 or 60 overdubbed guitar tracks, with all this harmonizing and other weird stuff going on.

    GW: When was this recorded?

J5: We just did this recently! We had Bregg Bissonette on drums and Brett Tuggle on keyboards, who both played with Dave back in the Skyscraper days. And Dave's vocals are incredible. He sings his ass off. Dave obviously has his plate full right now with Van Halen, but hopefully this record will get released one of these days.

    (thanks momshell from rotharmy)

You definitely can't be in two bands at once, especially if you're Michael Anthony.

I'd give it a pass. DLR without Van Halen is just not that interesting to me, same with Sammy Hagar or anyone else.

This stuff may never be released. Maybe after this VH tour is over and the band is having some down time, then maybe, but if I had to bet I would say it doesn't get released as long as Dave in in VH. It seems like this collaboration could have been done when Eddie was receiving cancer treatment, maybe Dave was just trying to stay in shape and keep busy while Eddie was recovering.

I think it's more of a side project keep in shape thing.
I can't imagine it would come out if Van Halen is a viable entity moving forward.
If it does it would be more of an indy type release.
It doesn't sound like a major try to sell records cd.
I would have to agree outside of Van Halen both Sammy and Dave's stuff is nowhere near as interesting.
