Default Sound on Sound: Ross Hogarth Interview

    Just a heads up...

There's a big article about the recording of ADKOT with Ross H in the new "Sound on Sound" audio recording magazine.

Didn't get a chance to read it yet... But it looks very detailed. It's the one with the MOOG Minitaur on the cover.

Wow. If Mike Anthony reads this he'll have an aneurysm.

I always assumed in the leadup to the album that the music would be recorded at 5150 and the singing elsewhere (For the sake of band harmony if nothing else.). Both the Esquire interview and this one illuminate that DLR persuaded the band to leave their sanctuary. I remember reading in an old interview around the time of 5150 that Ed thought the construction of 5150 led to both DLR and Templeman having friction with him because they thought he could do whatever he wanted after that. It says a lot that he'd leave 5150, his personal music play land, to record elsewhere so DLR would be more comfortable.

I still think that if Eddie had a second kid around Wolfgang's age who could sing, DLR would be out and remain out of Van Halen, replaced by Eddie Van Halen Jr. on vocals.

the esquire interview eddie talks about how HE wanted to work outside of 5150, that yes it was dave's idea to do it, but that he was down with it because now there's lots of bad memories at 5150 of just drugs and drinking and that old life that he used to lead. For him, it's prolly like an alcoholic going back and hanging out at the bar he always used to get drunk at, it just doesn't feel right any more.

That's quite plausible. Never thought of it that way. Makes perfect sense.

Yeah, I do remember him saying that and it makes total sense. It's hard to imagine Ed doing that without a bit of resistance though. 5150 has been his retreat for so long. It must have been frightening for him a bit.

Cool! This is the type of article I've been waiting for. I'm not a musician, but I really enjoy reading about how bands do things in the studio to get the final results.

I forked out the $1.49 for the Adobe PDF file. Good read.

Pretty interesting stuff from Ross! I mean if you've recorded before, a lot of the stuff he's talking about is very interesting with regards to getting the band's sound into the 21st Century (while still being VH) and the mixing. I really enjoyed it, but I like stuff like that.

Funny Dave did the keys on Tattoo.

I'm actually curious why Tattoo is in standard tuning and everything else on the album is down a half step (as per the norm with Dave). I know "Jump" and "I'll Wait" were too. Obviously they're keyboard driven and perhaps those riffs wouldn't have sounded good down 1/2. But can't imagine that tuning of "Tattoo" would be swayed because of the very faint keys.
