Default Interview With The Guy Who Interviewed Ed From Esquire

Just wanted to give everyone the heads up to this. We have a quick interview with the guy who interviewed Ed for Esquire Magazine. While there is nothing earth shattering in it, it is a good quick read.

Here is the link if anyone want to check it out: Click here

From the interview: "The next day, the interview went great and so Ed asked if I wanted to come back the next day and check out a new invention on one of his guitars."

This is good. Thanks for posting. That author is a lucky bastard!

The thing about his nerves and all the alcohol use and abuse for so many decades and how it must have affected his perceptions of situations, his outlook on things, his interpersonal relations, not just with Dave but family members like Wolf, etc..., is something I've thought about lately...and the Esquire piece is part of that.

Things must be so different for Ed this time around. Cool stuff.

Thats probably the Drop 2 Hell bridge. He used that on a sunburst Wolfie at soundcheck in Atlanta when they ran thru As Is. It was very cool to watch Ed work his magic.

I'm glad they asked him a follow up about Dave and the rolling the eyes bit. I was taking it as a negative but it seems not.

I wanted to ask you a few questions...but then I realized that then I would be the guy, who interviewed the guy, who interviewed the guy, who interviewed Ed......and that would just be silly.

Sure seems like it. When I read Sammy's book they talked about this with AVH, who apparently had just as much of an issue as EVH in the later years. I think the Esquire interview summed it up well when it stated "[COLOR="Blue"]The band hit big, but if his playing was brilliant, his drinking was spectacular. And a few years ago, he actually started falling apart. Too many years of jumping around stage had ruined his hip, requiring a new titanium model. Up to this point, self-respecting rock stars had had the decency to drown in their own vomit, not living long enough for their hips to stop working. But Ed's parts were wearing out, and men of a certain age all over the country felt a twinge, too. Of course, Ed had what it took to die of drink, too. As a drunk, he was no slouch, man."

We all knew it was a major part of his life, but I never really thought it was that bad, more hype than anything

    Wow
    It is what it is

I won't insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said

shook the hand of the man that shook the hand of the man.

Ed is almost this generation's version of Brian Wilson. And I mean that in a great way and I mean it in sad way too.

Van Halen music has to be some of the most uplifting hard rock ever made. It's top down summer time fun. And the pain and suffering that sits behind it is sad.
