Default Is The New Album Bombing?

I hate to say it, but it seems the new album is kinda bombing! It's been out for 2 1/2 months and it's only sold 316,000 copies so far. I thought it would be way past platinum by now. Don't get me wrong, some bands would love to sell that many copies in 10 weeks, but for VH it isn't that good. I love the new album..in fact I think it's the best album that they ever released. It would be kinda funny if ADKOT sold less than VH 3.

I really don't know if 316,000 copies is correct as I saw that posted on another rock site by a poster. I just looked on the Billboard Top 200 and it;s at # 54 this week.

Yes, I know it's totally changed for 70's & 80's rock bands these days. I just thought with DLR back, the new album would be selling like hot cakes. Everybody made a big deal of VH 3 only reaching Gold status. ADKOT might not even reach Gold, which is a shame because it's so great.

No, I'm talking about the fact that albums, especially by rock bands, are lucky as hell to go platinum. Van Halen selling as many albums as they have now is great. There's nothing to complain about with ADKOT when it comes to album sales.

No. Check out the top-ten best-selling rock albums of 2011. Not one broke a million copies, and the tenth-best sold just under a quarter-million. Foo Fighters' Wasting Light sold 380,000 for the entire year. I'd say 316,000 in 2 1/2 months is great, especially for a band that hasn't released a proper album in 14 years. Rest assured ADKOT will be one of the best-selling rock albums of 2012.

The rock market today is about playing live and selling merch. Record sales are just support for the tour nowadays...

Also consider the context that ADKOT debuted at #2 on Billboard. That should tell you a lot about the current state of record sales. In any case, I'd bet that ADKOT will reach Gold (or close to it) by the end of the year. Might even go platinum down the road a year or three.

Yes, there was a ton of interest in new VH. And a lot of people downloaded the album from the Internet illegally.

If there was a way to track number of illegal downloads...I bet they would have sold a lot more.

The industry is horrible unless you are targeting 14 year olds. I know because I have a 14 year old daughter.

Go see what One Direction has sold the past month.

VH missed the huge sellout of Albums by about a decade or more. If they had released this album in 1996....that might ave been huge.

    My opinion.

i figured it would sell a little more but that guess is one that is completely ignorant of how well music sells these days. Not sure what was expected from the band or their label as far as sales and that's probably the only thing you can use when trying to figure out if it is indeed "bombing".

I just want to say this, and this is not attacking anyone, but I want you to realize the attitude that permeated here that was pretty despicable at the time.

Before this album came out, a lot of people took delight in bashing the shit out of sales of the two Chickenfoot albums, saying how Van Halen would sell 10x what Chickenfoot did, and haha Sam and Mike suck, and every other childish insult out there. Typical ignorant stuff. You guys DO remember that right? People were taking pride in laughing at what a supposed joke Chickenfoot was and how NOBODY was buying their records, yadda yadda.

Now Van Halen hasn't even achieved the sales numbers of the first CF album and those same people are getting a real dose of reality with regards to what the record industry is really like now. I think it was an eye-opener for a lot of people, that are now saying, "Wow I guess I was pretty off on that one."

Now I think the sales for VH are decent. I don't think they're great, I don't think they're bad...they're just decent. I have to say I'm a bit surprised it hasn't been better, especially on the strength of the album.

Now you guys can say the first CF album did well because it was cheap at the end to purchase. Who cares. I wouldn't spend a penny on the Adele album if that's what it cost, I don't want it at any price, could care less. Nobody is buying an album they don't want simply because it's cheap. A bunch of dumb teenagers aren't going to buy a Van Halen album because it's a buck. They won't because they don't care about what they consider dinosaur rock.

Frankly I think both bands sold pretty well based on the state of rock music and record sales, but I am absolutely more impressed with CF's sales. They're not Van Halen, they don't have the name behind it, yet their stuff has sold solidly. I think you have to give it up to them. They promote their music very well.

I expected better numbers from VH. For me, I don't really care if the album sold two copies, it's a great album, I don't need a bunch of 12-year olds to buy it to validate its worth to me. I do realize some of you need the sales numbers to be impressive for whatever reason. The bottom line is they are decent, they should be better IMO.
