    Default Tupac performs at Coachella

Well guys, discuss...what does this do to the music industry, the art of music and performance, and artist rights?

My first impression, especially at the beginning of the clip is Tupac has a better slip n' slide dance floor than Dave - he's positively GLIDING left to right while standing still at times.

Chuckles aside, I think 3D holographic technology will have more of an impact for home video/entertainment when it eventually gets refined and cost effective for home consumer use. Look at movies like Minority Report and Total Recall to get an idea what I'm talking about. It's really just the next logical leap beyond current 3D film/broadcasts.

As far as "live" entertainment such as a concert setting, it can be and will be used for "gee whiz wow" effect but it won't replace an actual live performer or band. Imagine say, U2 recording an entire 2 hour show and peddling this around the globe in arenas or whatever - never turn even a fraction of the money they'd make actually playing the shows. In fact, U2 *was* one of the first bands to record a concert in IMAX 3D back in '05 and cool as it was to watch in a theater, it was still far less an experience than actually seeing one of their shows in person. If anything,3D holographic tech might increase the value of seeing the "real" performer onstage at some point in the future in the unlikely event it becomes more mainstream.

Artist/music rights or whatever - no effect. It's basically a display technology - HD, 3D, etc hasn't compromised anyone's intrinsic rights to their work, this won't either.

I do find it somewhat amusing and ironic on several levels that it's a rapper who has been the first to really showcase this technology in a concert setting - style over musical content n' all.

One thing I have found out since is that Japan has been doing this for a couple years. Hatsune Miku is a fictional avatar pop star that performs concerts:

I think steering away from living performers, this is something that dead performers will be dealing with, so to speak. That's what I meant about rights. Does creating an entirely new performance count as image rights?

In Vanilla Sky, for example, previous footage of Coltrane is broadcast as a hologram at a party and is the entertainment.

But this is something totally different. Tupac never yelled out "What the fuck is up Coachella?" and interacted with Snoop Dogg at Coachella. So now we're leaving "fictional character" and previous images and creating a new genre--newly programmed and created performances and images posing as a deceased artist who never did those things.

Think back to 1995-1997. If this technology existed then, as the Anthology's came out, The Beatles could have "performed" at, say, the Grammys, with a newly created hologram of John Lennon. Though I can't imagine them doing it, Ringo and Paul could tour as the Beatles with holograms of John and George. What kind of money would that bring in? More than a Paul/Ringo tour, that's for sure.

Where this will really be a moneymaker, though, will be in a slightly different format. Think about the technology in Social Network and Tron: Legacy. They've been talking about it for years, but we're at the cusp of Bogart and Clooney starring in movie together.
