Default VH at Boston Hard Rock Cafe 1998

Did anybody on here ever attend this show?

For some reason or another, I make timelines of my favorite bands' New England tour stops & I found this one to be the biggest oddity of the bunch.

Does anybody have any info about this show? Seems like it would've been a real tough gig to get into. Was it because Gary is from around here that they played such an intimate show?

I think this was more of a radio promotion than a show. Do I recall correctly that they might have played acoustic versions of Josephina and Dirty Water Dog? I think that was all that was played, but am not certain.

Yes, I also think this was a nod to Gary's home town.

I was at this show. It was free and open to the public. As someone said, they played DWD and Josephina. It was packed and they took some questions.

The next night was in infamous concert at Great Woods where Gary lost his voice/stage fright, etc. But they made up for it the next day.

Please, no more reminders of that night Fred. Terrible. How can your voice clear up in one day. And, he sounded fine for the part that he got through.

Never heard Cherone had stage fright, what's this?
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I was there at the Hard Rock. AWESOME day. Just made it in, it was a tight squeeze.
As far as the show? Gary's voice was blown out, I remember it clearly. He shouted to the end of One I Want and I think it was over then. I There was talk of stage fright but no one will ever know. There was definitely something wrong with Gary. He left the stage and Ed came out about 20 mins later and explained that the show was over and would it be ok if we all came back the next night? He seemed a little embarrassed but they put a plan together that quick behind the scenes. Some people were pissed but I was on vacation for another 3 days so I didn't mind. It was packed both nights. Great show(s) great venue.

sinner's swing summed it up pretty much. The band played four songs, two from VH3 and two from FW, if memory serves. The show seemed to be going great and then it stopped abruptly. After about 15-20 minutes EVH came out, said Gary couldn't finish, apologized, and told the fans to come back the next day.

Van Halen played the next night as planned and put on a great show. As a bonus, we got to see The KWS Band a second time, as they opened both the aborted show and the make-up one.

No idea what really happened that night.

About a year later I saw David Lee Roth (opening up for Bad Company) at the same venue and he said (paraphrasing) "I'm from MA too, but I'm not going to get nervous and lose my voice."

In 2002 I also got to see Gary sing a few songs with Sam during his set.

I was also at the Hard Rock that day, stood in line for 6 hours. Oh to be young and stupid again.

It was cool radio promo, and it was great to be in a room that small with a musical hero. Edward and Gary were so cool and down to earth.

Funny story, my buddy and I were about two people from being able to ask a question when the time ran out for the broadcast. We were a little disappointed.

I actually had the mic in front of my face and I stuttered and froze. Host: "Question for Ed?" ME: "uh um uh um" In slow motion horror, away went the mic to the next guy. I still kick myself to this day. The one chance!! Biggest surprise to me was how tiny Ed is. Little wee fella (that day with a great big poofy perm)

Well, if I remember right, there was room for about 300-350 and there were about 500-600 lined up. We were in about the 300 range and sweating bullets after 4.5 hours. Ed was playing on a prototype white Peavey Wolfgang that someone put together for him. I still have a few crappy quality pictures laying around.

    ha ha,

great night. I was there that night with my brother in law. At the show the next night too. I got the whole hard rock cafe 98 audio on cd. I remember the guy a few feet away from me asked Ed to sign his EBMM EVH and Ed hesitated and then said, "go buy a wolfgang instead...." it was like... oh man. Poor guy. ha ha...
I'll have to go listen to it again now....

I remember that guy. The whole time in line he was so confident that Ed was gonna sign his guitar. I kept telling him, man Ed doesn't sign guitars. He said, oh he'll sign this one. We laughed.

Regarding that Great Woods show, I think both EVH and AVH came out, and Ed did the talking. Yes, they played the first four songs (Unchained, two from VHIII, and Mean Streets, as I believe that was the set list that summer), and then had to postpone until the next night.

Fans left pissed, but I also remember after the next night, fans were singing the praises of Gary after the show. However, in retrospect, I think that's because they were so pumped to hear these classic VH tunes played for the first time since Dave left the band. The set list for the Cherone tour was a dream come true for anyone who had not seen the band live with DLR.
