Default Rolling Stones' 500 Greatest Albums

I know...I shouldn't have even bothered. You know what you are going to get with Rolling Stone. I had no idea David Bowie and Boy Dylan had that many albums (apparently everything they ever did is among the "greatest ever").

But I saw it in the store tonight and had to know...so I flipped through it. I thought I was going to have a big laugh as there was ZERO Van Halen in the first 400 spots. But finally VH 1 popped up at 415. That's it.

Weird thing about the list was that two KISS albums were on it. Alive was at 159 and Destroyer was in the 400s with VH 1. Something tells me the people in charge at RS didn't approve because the write-up for Alive was practically dripping with disdain. They had a long list of voters who may have thrown a monkey wrench at Rolling Stone on that one.

I am Ed's complete lack of surprise. RS considers the 60's and Grunge the only worthy eras.

I always wonder why Rolling Stone feels they need to keep doing these "Greatest" lists. Do they just like the attention it brings them because of the debates that will follow or do these special issues sell more copies than their regular issues? It's for sure not because of their "tastes in music". I mean it can't change that much from the last time they did this a few years ago. They will do the ususal and rank most of the Beatles albums in the top 20, Dyan, U2, Springsteen and The Stones will have several albums on the list and of course Nirvana's Nevermind will get a top 10 spot. They will give Van Halen, Aerosmith, Def Leppard and a handfull of other legendary hard rock acts one album on the list and they are probably in the 400's and Guns and Roses Appetite For Destruction will probably be the highest ranking hard rock album.

Since music is relative to the era and is subjective, they really need to only make these types of list once - in Chronological order - higlighting several albums form each decade and that is it.

    For exampel 60s

    Rubber Soul
    Are You Experienced
    Begger's Banquet
    Led Zeppelin II
    Let It Bleed....

    70s

    Zeppelin IV
    Who's Next
    Exile on Main St.
    Toys in the Attic
    The Cars
    Van Halen
    Highway to Hell...

    80s

    Back in Black
    Tattoo You
    Eliminator
    1984
    Appetitte For Destruction...

    90s

    Razer's Edge
    Shake Your Money Maker
    Whenever We Wanted
    10
    Never Mind....

As soon as I saw this thread title I knew the list was gonna suck donkey balls. Nothing new there.
    Hit the ground running...

We came through blood and fire...

"I aim to misbehave." - Captain Malcolm Reynolds: Firefly

Proud fan of BOTH major eras of Van Halen. Yes, we do exist.

"Men never commit evil so fully and joyfuly as when they do it for religious convictions"-- Blaise Pascal (1623-1662)

The Sass Jordan version of Van Halen was the best...

Any list where all 12 Van Halen albums aren't in the top twelve slots is going to suck. Any artist or band that ranks higher than Van Halen on any list is going to suck. I thought that was clear around here by now.

If you're gonna start a thread on this crap, a link always helps to get the shitball rolling.

(2003 list) Poor little Van Halen hasn't moved much in the last nine years according to the OP.

    LOL, true.

IMO, these lists have to do with timing.

I can understand there being a lot of albums on this list that VH fans generally wouldn't like, as it includes many different genres, but to have just one VH album in the 400s is just plain silly.

Rolling Stone hasn't been a true music magazine for a long time now. They're completely out of touch.

All of the musicians I know laugh everytime one these lists come out... and that's old and young musicians who play all types of music.

The magazine has been fading away for a while...

Van Halen is the only record on the list, and its 415? This poll has no credibility.

Van Halen, Fair Warning, 1984, and 5150 should all be on this list. Each one of these albums affected Rock and Roll history in a unique way.

This is Rolling Stone, the same hierarchy that has power of the RNRHOF.

They have as much credibility to judge music as I do of being a spokesperson for Jenny Craig (I'm 6'1", 310 pounds).

    You got it pretty close.

"Lists" do get attention. We all want our favorites to rank highly on other people's lists. It's kinda silly really, but that's human nature (causes wars even).

We could do it here. My list of greatest female ass-kicking protagonists in movies:

    1-Ripley (Alien/Aliens)
    2-Sarah Conner (T2)
    3-Hit Girl (Kick Ass)
    4-River Tam (Serenity)
    5-Trinity (The Matrix)

You feel the urge to comment on it, don't you?

Not surprised. Rolling Stones has their favorites. Never understood their business model of ignoring one of the most successful bands in history. Since fans of artists featured lead to sales of the mag and other R.S. things. If U2, Springsteen, Paul Mc. release anything according to them it's great. Also they praise the punk era bands. It is quite possible that VH has sold more records than the 10 most successful punk bands combined. I would like to note that I like punk music and the other artist mentioned above.
