Default What if... Glen Ballard produced A Different Kind Of Truth?

I found myself listening to Me Wise Magic the other day, and couldn't help but notice the difference between that Glen Ballard produced song and John Shanks' version of Van Halen. While I give Shanks all due respect, I can't help but think I'd enjoy the new VH record even more if Ballard was the man behind the console for these new songs.

Eddie's guitar tone was phenomenal, but evolved from its original brown sound, Al sounded incredible, Mike's backing vocals were stunning and his bass playing fit the groove perfectly. As much as I love ADKOT, Me Wise Magic tops most of the new songs for me.

Now, some things change forever, obviously. Mike is gone, and with him his backing vocal style. His bass playing replaced by Wolfgang's "lead bass" style. Ed's guitar tone has changed once again and is buzzier than it used to be. But what about Al's drums? I'd certainly take the MWM version over this new recording.

Does anyone else feel the same way, that as much as they love ADKOT, you think it'd have been more epic if Ballard had produced it (The true fantasy here would be having Ted Templeman produce it I suppose.).

Or what about Andy Johns? Would you have preferred him? No doubt he'd be banned from Van Halen recordings forever given his association with Sam, Mike and Chickenfoot but this is a "What If", as they used to have in Marvel Comics. Many complain about the brick wall dynamics on the new record and I'm one of them, but Shanks is just following what is normally done these days.

Get in the way back machine and play god. Who would you like to have producing A Different Kind Of Truth? Or who would you pick for a new album? Shanks again? Templeman? Johns? Fairbairn (Yes, I know he's dead.) Bob Rock? Ballard? Who?

Obviously, a producer's input isn't just into the sound of the album. He/she acts as a sounding board and works with the band to help craft the songs and refine them. In this respect, Shanks did a pretty good job, no question. That also would factor into it. I think Ballard could do the same, though.

I'd pick Ballard, personally, if Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff No More were any indication.

No! You have to change a little from time to time, or VH would just be one of those shitty bands that have a hit, and then the rest sounds just like the hit! Then no one cares any more!

Ted Templeman......would have prefered a more live sound. The record sounds too polished to me. The first six records with Ted sounded less polished, more live sounding and a bit raw. Loved that sound.

I don't think Shanks had much to say about how the songs were arranged, as most were probably complete by the time he heard them, especially the old demos.

Templeman was the best. I can't help but think that the new VH album would be much better if Ted had full control.

IMO here's how you could improve the IMPACT of the record..

    1. Shorten the average LENGTH of the songs. These songs are too long.

    2. Remove Tattoo, Trouble, Blues, and As Is. These songs pull down the record. They don't fit in, and give the record an uncohesive vibe. Release them later in two 2-songs iTunes EP's during the tour.

    3. Change the running order

I would make this the running order...

    SIDE 1
    She's the Woman
(extend the beautiful intro from Blood into a little 1 minute instrumental)
    Blood and Fire
    China Town
    Big River

    SIDE 2
    Outta Space
    Bullethead
    HoneyBabySweetieDoll
    Stay Frosty
    Beats Workin'

VH always kept you wanting more. Less is more.

This 9 song record would IMPACT MORE.

As far as the producer of choice. Ted T.

But in realistic terms it would make no difference.

In 2012 all rock records are going to be brickwalled. The labels and iTunes will DEMAND IT. That is the consumer environment these distributors work within. You can't change that and THAT is the specific problem here.

I think you might love the record more (since it is brickwalled) by listening to it with a top quality frequency separating audio system. It makes all the difference in the world. Because the relative volume levels of the different instruments are canceling each other out, you need top-quality frequency response to help counteract that issue.

    Nah,

ADKOT is, IMO, the greatest rock record made by guys approaching 60.

It is a masterpiece all things considered.

If I took you back to 1982 in a time machine and played you this record and told you that THIS was what VH was going to sound like and release 30 years later in 2012 you would be stunned.

This record is a gift to the music world that 10 years from now will be renowned by VH fans.

Just for reference, are the Chickenfoot albums brick walled? I would prefer the sound of Chickenfoot's first album to the production style of ADKOT, personally.

I will admit I have played a lot of music in front of a lot of drums over the years. My ears cannot be trusted.

On an aside, Ballard is a really cool guy. I did some guitar work for him in the late 90s at his home studio in Encino. He has a total new agey, hippie vibe about him but not enough to make him annoying or pretentious.

    He had good wine too.

    Couldn't disagree with you more.

Average song length is less than four minutes, with three songs less than three minutes, how short do you want them?

As Is is a great tune in my opinion, so is You and Your Blues, couple of my personal favorites on the album, especially You and Your Blues.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

I wish Bruce Fairbairn was still alive. Balance, to my ears, is the best produced VH album by a mile. I hate the Templeman method of panning guitar left.

As Is to me doesn't work with the other songs.

It is too dark and sinister I think.

At the end of that song... the most dissonant and disturbing VH has ever sounded
