Default 03.30.12: Van Halen @ Consol Energy Center - Pittsburgh, PA - DISCUSSION/REVIEWS, etc

I had the middle VIP package and I was completely blown away when they made the announcement "Tonight there won't be any backstage tour", we're going to hear soundcheck". Apparently the band was running late and there was no way they could have the backstage tour while soundcheck was going on". They kept us back at the soundboard. We got to hear them reherse the song list in order up to Tattoo so we heard Unchained, Runnng with the Devil, She's the Woman, Romeo Delight and the start of Tattoo. After playing some riffs Ed made the comment "The drums are loud as fuck!" Alex said, it's a different building referring to this being the first time they played the new Consol energy center since the Civic arena was just torn down. They stopped Tattoo about 30 seconds in and Wolf told his ED "Dad lets try it again and this time try not to suck?" It was a joking manner. They acknowledged us and Ed said to the VIP's, I guess you shouldn't have heard that (referring to not playing it right). As they escorted us out both Ed and Wolf acknowledged us and said have fun tonight. Everybody was well behaved during sound check unlike the VIP group in 04. I can't image we didn't see much else because it was very close to 6:30 and they had to open the doors. Not as good as the 04 sound check where Ed handed out a handful of picks to me and told me to pass them out and not keep them for myself.

On to the show I had 2nd row center, and I video taped about 13 songs. I was actually able to not watch many Youtube videos from this tour so it wouldn't spoil anything. This is the 18th time I've seen them play and I have seen every tour since 1984. I couldn't tape everything because the battery only lasts about 85 minutes. I'll post them on Youtube ASAP. The security guards had no problem taping the show. This is my 18th time I've seen VH and I thought it was right up there as being one of the best shows. The youtube clips you see don't do the show justice and I thought they were very tight, Ed played amazing, and I thought Roth sounds good on most of the songs. He strained on some and came in early on a section of Panama where he said "Let's try this again". It's just amazing how happy Ed is playing with his son and they play so well together. Wolf's background vocals were outstanding.

They didn't play Full Bug, or Hear bout it later, or you and your blues, they played Women in Love, and Blood and Fire which was really good. I thought it was better live than on CD. Toward the end you can tell that their age was starting to catch up to them when Dave and Ed were running around a little bit. But their energy level was very good and Eddie hasn't played this good since 95 in my opinion. You could tell he was stone cold sober. Roth didn't have that big mic for a prop this time around thank god.

Overall I'm very happy their performance if this is their last tour. If they don't tour again but I woulld be very surprised but I would be happy with the last concert.

Pretty good show. I was on the floor for Pittsburgh and in the nose bleeds for Buffalo. In my opinion, Buffalo was a better show overall. I think they were having problems with their ear monitors at Pittsburgh, because they had some serious timing issues between the four of them. I thought Dave was on par for his performances on the rest of the tour, but my casual VH friends were thoroughly underwhelmed with his vocals on quite a few songs.

Highlights: Panama, Girl Gone Bad (nailed it!!), Women in Love, Somebody Get me a Doctor, Everybody Wants some, Unchained, Eddie's Solo, Alex's Solo, She's the Woman.

Clunkers: China Town (Dave and Eddie were way off on it), Dance the Night Away, Hot For Teacher, Jamie's Cryin', Tatoo, I'll Wait.

Girl Gone Bad by far had the best response from the crowd in my section.

There was no mention of the infamous blowers either. Dave instead yelled at security to move the barriers forward so the front row could be closer to the stage.

There was a female on stage videoing Alex during Somebody Get Me A Doctor with a DSLR, so a live DVD may in fact be in the works. I did not see her on stage the rest of the evening, so maybe the DVD will be a compilation of songs at various cities on the tour and the small gigs they did before the tour.

Overall it was a fun night! I had a great time with my friends from high school, picked up a tour shirt finally, listened to the most kick ass music on this earth, and had some great eating to munch on after the show too. That traffic on I-579N out of town was a bit insane though. It looked like the the fella's buses were even stuck in it!

I must say that I came away a little disappointed from the show. It wasn't really directed toward the band and how they played but more from the set list. HAIL and The Full Bug are two of my favorite tunes. They got replaced with SGMAD and Jamie's Crying. Heard both of those in 2007 and frankly the only difference with that tour and this was the three new songs and Girl Gone Bad. True if I was a soccer mom, I would have been saying something different.

Anyway the band almost lost it during China Town. Maybe that was because of the loud drums Eddie was complaining about. Dave didn't sound good on it and his vocal phrasing was off in that song and others. There was a very noticeable music screw up with China Town. Have no idea who was guilty.

Dave did the revised Dance the Night Away and while had a few issues with Blood and Fire, it seemed to be ok. He did have a few moments where he had to pop his monitor back in his ear.

Eddie was great. My friends were commenting how he played like it was 20 years ago. Alex and Wolfgang were great. In fact one of my friends who one definitely was uber pissed with Mike being canned said "Mike who?" Said the kid is doing what Mike's role was. True his voice is different but not as dramatic as Dave's lead vocals compared to 84. Kudos to the kid.

One funny moment was when I saw Eddie laughing with Wolfgang and pointing towards the stage right part of the floor. Eddie gave a thumbs up to whomever was in the crowd. Couldn't tell if a girl showed off the girls or not.

Another thing I was disappointed in was the crowd response in Pittsburgh. I figured they would be like other typical blue collar cities that I have seen VH in. Up on their feet, cheering for every song. Saw quite a few people sitting down. Heck I understand GGB may not be a "hit" but stand up. The crowd was more of what you expect from Columbus. That said everybody I met from Pittsburgh were really cool especially when they found out I was from Cleveland. You guys are a class act.

Don't take my review the wrong way. It was a good show. I was expecting more from the band from the vids and comments I have heard from other cites. I had a good time but it wasn't as good as it could have been.

WTF does that mean? I saw the last tour in Columbus and the crowd was in to it......

I went to the show and recorded the entire audio which came out fantastic, and almost half the show with video, which has it's issues, but it's very watchable. Here's Girl Gone Bad which was killer in concert.

I'll post more when i can stitch the audio recording with the video. Thought last nights show was a mixed bagged, but overall very very good.

    I was Section 2, Row 7..dead center.

I really thought the vocals were completely buried in the mix from my standpoint, but after watching ImthePapa's video...must have been my seat position in the arena.

I really think that Chinatown has to go...it's a train wreck vocally and last night it just sucked. I'm not a fan of the album version, so it's easy for me to "hate" on the live version.

    Girl Gone Bad....butter.
    Women in Love....butter.

Hot for Teacher...just bad. I don't think I've ever seen a good live version of the tune, even from the '84 Tour. Once again...it's not my favorite tune to start with, so I'm a bit biased.

What was Dave screamin' at during She's the Woman...something about "let them sit there, they bought the tickets"...I'll have to youtube it.

I liked the show...of course being that close really helps.

Ed was so "on". Best part...during Ice Cream Man...Dave is being Dave....Ed just starts laughing his ass of because Dave is...well....As Is.

I could sit here and just throw Dave under the bus regarding his vocals last night...he's the only weak link live.
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

Just watched the Pittsburgh version of Blood and Fire...

Sounds pretty damn good here. Are people being overly critical of Daves vocals on this?
