Default ADKOT VS BOBW and BOV1 songs

I don't think this was posted before but where do you rank the ADKOT songs in comparison to the 3 BOBW songs and the 2 songs from BOV1.

I like the ADKOT songs the most and I would probably put MWM and CGTSNM in the middle of the pack and maybe LTS in the middle as well and the other two at the bottom.

I would rank the songs but I would question it soon after so you guys can do that.
Janie Liszewski did the IMPOSSIBLE she helped Eddie Van Halen get better. Deal with it.

Oh man, I forgot "Humans Being!"

Personally, I'd rank "Humans Being" above "She's The Woman," but below "As Is" under Classic songs! I think it's awesome!!!

No reason to hide at all. Something about that riff grabs me in a way that is probably only rivaled by Unchained. And this is before even taking into account the epicly hypnotic soloing.

    1) I gotta get Human's Being in top 1 or 2 - i almost forgot too..
    2) Stay Frosty (why don't they replace ICM with it in current set?)
    3) She's the Woman - this new bass player really can play!
    4) Learning To See - WAYYY under rated song. Over produced, but amazing IMO
    5) Me Wise Magic - Add to current set now -pls drop Pretty Woman.
    Blood & Fire
    6) Up For Breakfast - Fun song, Great vibe - lyrics don't bother me.
    7) You and Your Blues
    8) The Trouble With Never
    9) As Is
    10) China Town
    11) Big River
    12) Beats Workin
    13) Tattoo - who picked as first single??
    14) Outta Space
    15) It's About Time
    16) Cant Get This Stuff No More - The start of Dave rap / talking / singing?
    17) Honeybabysweetiedoll

Glad to see some people agreeing with me on that one. The Roth elitists tend to jump down my throat whenever I profess my love for any 86-98 material (not on this site, but in my actual daily life).

The only tunes on ADKOT, imo, that are in the same league as Me Wise Magic and Humans Being are You and Your Blues, Blood and Fire, and As Is. Stay Frosty is a good tune, but let's be realistic here, guys. It's Ice Cream Man Part 2. I love it, but it's not in the same league as Me Wise Magic or Humans Being, in every aspect. At least to me, it isn't. Just my opinion. As for the other tunes on ADKOT, they are stellar, but, for me, they don't rank up there with Humans and Me Wise.

Learning to See is only a good tune because of the lyrics.
Up for Breakfast is a groovy tune but the lyrics are kind of out there.
It's About Time is a great song to me, only because it was my first exposure, as a fan, to new VH. Very exciting time, I remember.

Can't compare the 3 new tracks from BOBW with ADKOT, though. Mainly, because Ed simply wasn't ED. He wasn't himself. He was gulping the Loon. I'm sure if Ed was focused as he is now, we probably wouldn't even be having a Roth fronted VH. We would have gotten a new album with Sammy.

Can't Get This Stuff No More is a damn good tune, but I've never put it up on the same level as Humans Being or Me Wise Magic. Those 2 tunes are simply on a whole other level. 2 of VH's greatest songs....EVER.

Classic tunes I can't get enough of... ever:

    1. Blood and Fire (It's Ripley, only better with a SMOKING guitar solo)
    2. Stay Frosty (Kills me every time)
    3. Me Wise Magic (VH at their very best)
    4. Humans Being (A Sam era rocker I absolutely love)
    5. China Town (I don't know how to define it but it's awesome)
    6. The Trouble With Never (How III should have sounded)
    7. She's The Woman (Just downright funky)

    Great Songs:

    8. You and Your Blues
    9. Big River
    10. As Is (Great main riff but it's got some flaws for me)
    11. Outta Space (This would easily make the classics list if it was still "Let's Get Rockin")
    12. Honeybabysweetiedoll (Some cool parts but the sustainer kills me)
    13. Beats Workin' (Fun song but I don't care for the intro)

    Good Songs:
    14. Tattoo (A fun song live but I never listen to it)
    15. Can't Get This Stuff No More

Songs one level below the level above:
    16. Learning to See (Lyrics are a bit too preachy and heavy handed)

Songs I can't enjoy due to bad production and below average lyrics:
    17. It's About Time

Songs I can't enjoy due to unlistenably cheesy lyrics:
    18. Up For Breakfast (Easily the worst song since III)

We came through blood and fire...

"I aim to misbehave." - Captain Malcolm Reynolds: Firefly

Proud fan of BOTH major eras of Van Halen. Yes, we do exist.

"Men never commit evil so fully and joyfuly as when they do it for religious convictions"-- Blaise Pascal (1623-1662)

The Sass Jordan version of Van Halen was the best...

I agree with most of your post, but I don't agree with this. Once you get past the word association with "ice cream" and "frosty," and the blues base of both tunes, most of the generalities and specifics are very different.

Very generally: "Stay Frosty" is similar to "Ice Cream Man" in a way that it's similar to "Take Your Whiskey Home," or "The Full Bug," i.e. it starts out as an acoustic blues jam and then it goes batshit before becoming a full-tilt boogie.

More specifically, "Stay Frosty" is similar to "Ice Cream Man" in that Dave plays an extended, acoustic blues intro on both tunes.

With that said, musically, "Stay Frosty" and "Ice Cream Man" have very different structures, chord changes, and rhythmic breakdowns. ("Stay Frosty" is much more complex.) The hooks and choruses of "Stay Frosty" and "Ice Cream Man" are very different.

Lyrically, "Ice Cream Man" is a sexual double entendre whereas "Stay Frosty" is a demented look at the world's four major religions, contrasting their similarities and differences.

One can write off "Stay Frosty" by saying it's "Ice Cream Man Part 2," but that ignores the specifics of the music and the lyrics.

Excellent post. It's overly simplistic to say that "Stay Frosty" is just "Ice Cream Man" part deux. Its similar in the ways you stated, and that's all.

Also, I think the reason they are not playing 'Stay Frosty" in concert is b/c lyrically, it is a mouthful (even for Dave) and he could never enunciate it correctly in a live setting. Hell, he has trouble getting the lyrics in on the regular stuff. Before anyone slams me over this, FYI I love his recorded work with VH and would rather have him in VH more than anyone, but live, he struggles. To me, its almost like he gets winded and just can't get enough air to sing live. He doesn't breathe right or something. Maybe he has COPD from the cigs.

Keep him coming in the studio though! His recorded work is brilliant

I'm not writing it off at all. I love the tune. But, musically, it is actually quite similar to Ice Cream Man. The lyrics are obviously different (its a new song) and some of the chord progressions are different, but, the basic structure is quite similar. It's a basic blues based progression like Ice Cream Man was. If we were to dissect it, we'd see that it is different by way of chord progressions, differentkeys etc. But barebones, structure wise? It's very similar. That's not a drawback at all, in my opinion. It's the blues. VH wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel with this track. None of that is a drawback, though. Like I said, I think it's a killer tune and I love Dave's lyrics. Probably some of Dave's most witty lyrics in a song, ever.

But , it doesn't rank up with Me Wise and Humans Being in the pantheon of truly great VH songs, to me. Great VH songs are different. Like Humans Being and Me Wise Magic, You and Your Blues is just different. It has a different feel to it. I don't know about you but it creates a kind of tension within you. Kind of like having butterflies in your stomach. Humans Being was different than any other song VH released with Sam. The lyrics were different. The music was different. The attitude was different. Same with Me Wise Magic.

Stay Frosty doesn't have that difference factor, imo.
