Here's my theory. The acoustic Dave uses is tuned to the same key that Stay Frosty is in.

It makes me wonder if they have tried to work up Stay Frosty, but don't feel ready. That seems to be the only explanation.

Come on guys, bust out that new classic!

it's a good theory if we assume the band can only afford one acoustic guitar.

Agreed! "Stay Frosty" would be unbelievable!
Wolfgang did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

Considering it' s a $6,000 Gibson, that may have been the maximum in the budget for one song.

That's a good point, Wolfgang Slinger! Where in the world would they find the money for another Gibson acoustic?! (BTW, is it the same acoustic Dave is playing Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary" in his "Scrapbook - Part 1" video?)

As far as the new "Ice Cream Man," I have wondered the same thing. Dave plays it in C during his intro and then they shift to D# right before the band comes in and for the duration. At the Cafe Wha? show it looked like Ed was thrown for a loop and he was laughing with this what-do-we-do-now face like "WTF key is Dave playing this in?" And then when Dave changes it up he smiles like, "Okay, we're on it." I thought it was a mistake at that show; however, that's how they're doing it every show now. So, yeah, good point: What is with the new "Ice Cream Man" and changing its key halfway through the song?

I'm glad you guys are on the case, and I noticed this right away. It must be one of those Diamond Dave creative decisions. I thought it was perhaps to save his voice a little, but playing the beginning in the regular key doesn't really challenge his voice at all. File this one under "why is he changing the melody line of DTNA?". ICM does sound really awkward when he moves up to the regular key, although I doubt most of the crowd notices. Once Ed kicks in with that massive solo, all is forgotten.

I think it's because he has fewer "gaps" in his voice in C than in D#. He can maintain that low, sultry whiskey drinkin' voice throughout the C portion which sounds closer to the original album cut. When he moves it up, it seems (to me anyway) that while he can sing it still in that key, his voice sounds more nasally or something.

    That's my theory, anyway.

Once....just fucking once I want him to break into Stay Frosty. That song deserves it.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.
