Default Is there any real reason to dump my regular MXR 90 phaser for the EVH MXR 90?

Obviously, the EVH model looks cooler, but is there any real reason to trade up to it from the standard MXR 90 model?

Does the "Script" button provide enough of a change-up in tone to justify the extra expense?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

The EVH phase 90 is like two pedals in one. Gives you both the classic and modern phase 90 types. Plus, you get stripes.

I bought a reissue phase 90 for well under $100 and did the r28 mod to it, which is what the button on the EVH one does. Took me 10 minutes and I'm not very good at these types of things. Sounds just like the original one now. I never liked the modern MXR phase so I guess if you want both the original and the modern phase tones then you need the EVH, if not then they are not worth the higher price. They look really cool though.

The new MXR pedals have a hella bright blue led.

you got that right Johnny.... its freakin blinding!!!!! ha ha...

I had a regular MXR years back and now I have the EVH version. Been playing for 16 years and I cant tell the difference. For people who play like I do it really does not matter. I have one for the collection purpose but not the sound. I do use my EVH and it sounds nice but I am sure if your only trying to come close to EVH's tone the standard one is just fine. If you need to be exact and your rig is thousands and thousands of dollars and you need perfect EVH pitch (which most people cant do anyways because its all in his fingers) get the EVH version.

    You got that right Rob.
I still have my old Phase which actually I think is starting to take a dump now (it thumps something terrible on the low end of the sweep) but tonally it's not a huge difference. I also did the R28 mod on mine and put a microswitch in place so I can switch between tones, like the EVH but it also depends on your rig like you said.
I have some amps that you can barely tell, if at all between the original and mod tone. Yet my Marshall, yeah, you can tell immediately. Kind of depends on the tonestack in an amp, as well as how the gain stage is structured.
I say, if you like the looks of the EVH then cool, but I wouldn't ditch your old pedal simply because of it. Hell....You could always just paint up your MXR, or just get a new case from one of those online DIY stompbox places for cheap. to keep your old one original
Frankly, there was a guy on YT who did an A/B comparison between the handwired Script reissue and the EVH through various tones and styles, and the Handwired got the most votes in just about every category. How much was just wanting to like the HW Script more....Who knows...but I agreed it sounded pretty good too.

I have an original MXR Phase 90 with a 1974 pot code...it is amazing. From what I'm told, the handwired reissue script Phase 90 is good. You would even probably do better to get a cheap reissue and mod it. I don't see the point of the EVH Phase 90.

This! I had the EVH and hand wired for about a week. The difference is subtle, but it's there. Ended up selling the EVH. The handwired's sweep and depth were just spot on.

I HATE blue LEDs. And SO many pedals have them now. They blind you on a dark stage.

not to mention I just got my EVH phaser back from dunlop after it took a dump on me after literally 2 hours of use over the last 2 years. I could not believe it had something fried in it when it was just about brand new. Not the quality they used to be. Again, I love the look and will most likely keep the EVH and use that one but if I was really looking for a player, I would get an original.

Would anyone be willing to post or pm me on the specifics of the R28 mod?

Just look for the resistor marked R28 and cut one of the legs. Of course, make sure it doesn't touch anything. I haven't done the mod in years- I think R28 is near one of the 1/4" jacks.
And it's a VERY EASY mod. It takes longer to remove the screws than it does to perform the mod.
Do it. You'll definitely notice the difference.

Help him out and buy the EVH MXR 90.
