Default Acoustic Guitar on Stay Frosty

What kind of acoustic guitar is being played on Stay Frosty? Is it a dobro or a nylon string?

Also, is that Eddie or Dave playing the acoustic parts? It sounds like Eddie to me, but we know Dave can play some guitar.

    What do you think?

I think Ross Hogarth posted on here saying that the intro part is dave and the acoustic guitar during the band part is Eddie?

that would be a surprise. why when you have EVH would you let anyone else play a guitar part on record. plus, its pretty clean and sharp. better than Dave.

I don't think it's a surprise. It was Dave playing the beginning of Ice Cream Man. It makes sense for him to do this as well.

Dave's actually a pretty good guitar player.

I'm not really hearing a change in the playing style of the acoustic in the intro+first verse compared to the acoustic in the rest of the song. I gotta take Ross H. word for it... but to my ear it sounds like Daves playing all the acoustic parts.

The flatpicking style that Dave uses is actually pretty hard to do. I'd be surprised if Ed could do it.

DLR has played guitar on four songs in the VH catalog I believe.

    Ice Cream Man
    Could This Be Magic?
    The Full Bug
    Stay Frosty

We all know that DLR plays the acoustic on ICM, The Full Bug there are interviews on here with Ed in which he says DLR played the intro.

Ross Hosgarth himself posted on here and said DLR played the intro to Stay Frosty.

The only one I am not sure of is Could This Be Magic?, but I think I remember reading/hearing that he did, and he also played it on his radio show when he was talking about playing acoustic, and he talked about writing it, so my guess would be he did.

    I don't think I am missing any.

There is also that old demo Angel Eyes that did not make it onto VHII, but I think that is it.

The irony is that DLR is good at the one thing on the guitar in which Ed has said he is not good at himself; finger-picking.

I think the exact quote was "I'm shit at finger picking".

From what I have seen and heard, DLR is good at finger picking on open tunings, and that is about it when it comes to guitar. I am sure the better musicans on here can expand upon it much better than I.

its probably Dave on the intro then (based on the feedback).

No guesses on what kinda guitar Dave is strummin? Sounds like a nylon string to me.

I would love to see this song live. I was suprised how well it scored on VHND's song poll.

Anyone got the tab for Stay Frosty?

I think its Dave all the way through, and it does kinda sound like a dobro or maybe just some deep-ish reverb

Ross said to me (in the Stay Frosty thread) that it's Dave playing the guitar during the intro and first couple of verses, once the electrics kick in, it's Ed all the way, acoustics included. If you listen carefully you can tell that the acoustics behind the electrics are played with a pick rather than with fingers, there's a more pronounced 'attack', which, to me, indicates that it's Ed playing them.
The electrics are tuned to Drop-C (C G C F A D) so I would imagine that the acoustics are tuned similarly, they're most certainly steel strung (sounds, to me, like a small bodied 'Parlour' sized guitar), the intro acoustics sound softer (like a nylon) because Dave plays them with his fingers.

No real need for tab for the rythm guitars, it's a fairly straight forward 12-bar progression of C-G-A#-A (thats taking in account for the Drop-C tuning), you may want tab for the solo's though, it took me a while to work them out, Ed's a slippery fucker on those monsters.

Once I've unpacked and setup all my gear, I may post a video explaining how to tune/play the song. It's stupidly easy once you figure it out (exept the solo's, Ed bough his A-game when he recorded them, his legato has improved a great deal since his surgery).

Just from sound alone (I have no definitive inside info to prove it either way) I'd say TommyWho is right on.

The intro acoustic tone definitely sounds nylon to me. Listen especially at 0:38. VERY nylon sounding. When the electrics come in, the hidden acoustic playing that's mirroring it definitely changes from the intro tone. Sounds like Ed's odd picking to me.
