Ironic coming as it does from a very old series of books from which a great deal of more well-known and successful sci-fi borrowed.

The first few books in the series were actually really good. Just your typical sword and sorcery stuff, but I found them entertaining when I was a kid.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Disney was hoping this would be their next Pirates of the Caribbean, now it's their next Bruno Mars.

It just wasn't the kind of movie anyone gives a crap about. Plus it is in the theaters at a time when a movie about Navy SEALs - played by Navy SEALs - is in the same theaters. That movie cost almost nothing to make, and has real-life badasses.

Just a dumb move by Disney all the way around.

The way they marketed the movie was horrible. First of all, most people have no idea who John Carter is, so simply titling the movie "John Carter" is lame. Calling it "John Carter of Mars" isn't a whole lot better, but it does stand out and at least gives you an idea of what the movie may be about.

Second, they didn't hype the fact that it was based on a popular sci-fi book series, written by the creator of "Tarzan." You have to build interest in a film if you want people to see it.

All I saw in the ads was a lot of CGI, a few people, and the name "John Carter." I have no idea if the movie is good or not because the advertising wasn't interesting enough for me to give a damn, and I did read the books as a kid.

Exactly. I've never heard of this John Carter guy. He sounds really boring. Even his name is boring. I've no interest whatsoever in John Carter, whoever he is.

I felt the same way you guys did. But then every person I knew that saw it said it was really good. Then screenwriters I like starting talking on Twitter about how it was really good. The best endorsement for me, and not really a big name, was Damon Lindelof's, who was Lost's head writer and show runner, as well as writing Star Trek, (this year's) Prometheus, and (next year's) "untitled Star Trek sequel".

I was on the Friday Night Lights bandwagon the night the pilot premiered on NBC to the night the series finale aired on DirecTV. I like Taylor Kitsch. So that was a plus. But I never knew that Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church, and Bryan Cranston were in it until I looked it up on IMDB.

It was then I realized that it was written and directed by Andrew Stanton, who also has writing credits for Toy Story 1-3, and wrote/cowrote as well as directed/codirected A Bug's Life, Monster's Inc, Finding Nemo, and Wall-E. Major credentials on great stories, great movies.

So, I kind of want to see it now.

A couple things. I think marketing-wise they were kind of screwed because Cowboys v. Aliens bombed (I liked it). I think they were limited in how to market it because of that. It would have been difficult to show period screens then alien/Mars scenes and not get those comparisons. Secondly, I think Battleship, which also stars Kitsch, along with Liam Neeson and Alexander Skarsgard (Eric, True Blood), is going to be a big hit. John Carter should have been released AFTER Kitsch's box office credentials got a boost from that movie.

But, then again, I'm just a lowly dude somewhere, not an exec at Disney.

I'm holding out for "Billy Carter." One redneck's struggle to escape his brother's shadow and make really shitty beer.

The CGI is gonna be epic!

Well I thought it was shit just from the trailer alone. You'd have to pay me a hefty sum to sit through that film.

I believe the title was supposed to reference Mars but Disney decided to drop it due to the other Mars movie that bomb the year before "Mars Needs Moms" (which I've seen on Encore and it's not too bad). I guess they figured the Mars association would kill John Carter too.

John Carter sounds like someone from a boy band. JC for short.

He can jump really far, right? That's it??

It's just more "I'm Lord Arf Arf of the Clan McBarf Barf" that doesn't interest me at all.
