Default When to go for sound check?

I know you can't get in to a sound check without some friends in high places...but I know a trick to get into the building where I could probably hear the sound check (a little anyway).

But when do they usually have it? 1, 2, 3 hours before the show?

    Anyone know?

I'd hate to see you get barred from the show just for trying to hear sound check.

Personally, I wouldn't take the risk. Either you get in easy breezy or it's some form of subterfuge -- which I don't think security or the band would look too kindly on.

Don't get me wrong, I've fantasized about hiding out and catching sound checks -- but I'd hate to get either arrested or booted from the venue.

However, there are definitely some people on here who have been to sound checks -- I'd be curious to hear their stories.

Usually 5PM on the day of the show.

I have to say I'm with Kevin, though. I walked into the Air Canada Centre in Toronto in 2004 and caught Mike Anthony and Alex on stage in a near pitch black arena with just a few lights on the stage and they were just jamming around. I sat down for a few minutes with my buddy until a feeling of trespassing came over me and I felt totally in the wrong. I was just worried about not seeing that actual show.

It was cool for a few seconds but not worth getting my ticket barcode banned from the building.

They have been doing soundcheck closer to 4pm.

Some arenas have the box office inside, and you can hear it without trespassing.
This was the case in Buffalo, and I have done this the last tour in Greensboro, and plan to do it again 4/21.

At the Yum center in Louisville, it was near impossible to hear. That place was sealed up tight, box office was outside. If I put my ear to the outside glass doors at the front lobby, we could slightly hear them ripping through ChinaTown.

We heard soundcheck from 4:35pm - 5:10pm in Manchester, NH...

An elderly security guard inside the Verizon Center was reading a book... He didn't care at all that we were there. He pointed us to a window & door where we could see the band and the big screen.

This was Manchester, NH -- a nice, small city -- I mean, I don't know how friendly they would've been in Philly, or someplace like that.

Someone said that they played a bunch of songs before we got there, at around 4pm, but while we were there, they played "Drop Dead Legs," twice (!) "Feel Your Love Tonight" "Outta Space" "You and Your Blues" A few bars of "Don't Tell Me," and "You Really Got Me." The intro to "hang 'em High."

I wrote a thread about it, "rare songs played at soundcheck in Manchester, NH."

It was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

When you think about it - did it really matter that you got to see some of the sound check? Hell no...not one bit. And this ol' boy understood that only too well.

But you usually get some self-absorbed a-hole that thinks stopping fans from hearing some of the sound check is on the same level as solving world hunger.

I spent more to park my car in Boston than I did my entire night in Manchester!

Saw the schedule posted during the backstage tour - the Van Halen soundcheck is between 4:00-5:00 PM. VIP Tour starts at 5:30 PM.

    Cheers,

I snuck in for soundcheck for two Rush concerts in Germany around 1991. There was no security anywhere at all. We got politely asked to leave once by the guy we had previously seen drive Neil up to the stage door. The second time, no one bothered us at all. Primus were throwing a frisbee around (no seats on the floor, gen. adm. only) while Rush went through a few songs. It was pretty cool. If you sit far away from the stage, no one will see you, certainly not anyone on the stage.

Thanks for the concern..but I don't think my "plan" would get me barred...
I know the arena offices are open until 5pm...and one time I had to pick something up from them and Cirque de Soleil or something was practicing, and I found the music was crystal clear from the office lobby..
Also the Box office is inside the stadium, so it might be a good spot too!
You just need to have a "story" of why you need to go in!

Wouldn't be able to see anything...just maybe catch a few rehearsal tunes..

I remember going to Rush at the Montreal forum, and the GA line was long..so we went inside claiming we need to use the payphone..we just pretended to talk on the phone until they officially open the doors..then we jumped ahead and beat the crowd.
